Thinking about selling the ADATs and going pro tools.

Digi 001 what's your real thoughts. (If you don't own one, don't reply to this thread!) Are the converters that bad? I have plenty of Pre's and comps, so I don't care about the mic pre's on the unit.

How does it work on PC vs MAC. (I can get my hands on a MAC 9600 200mhz relatively easy)

With LE can you use other sound cards as well? (Layla. MOTU, ect..)

This is not for a bedroom studio but a pro project studio at my home. We do jingles for comercials, TV adds, etc. Plus band demos or full CD productions.

Don't really want to spend 5K on Pro tools alone but will spend up to 2K (or so) on the right setup including computer.

Here we go. I Do own it. I love it.

The converters are ok, in my mind. The pre's a little less so.

You cannot use any other soundcards with PT le unless you use the free version. I do not recommend it.

Depending on how many inputs you think you need, there is a USB version coming out sometime in MArch. Could be a possibility.

My best recommendation is to goto the Digidesign website and READ. ALOT. And then ask some questions there. At least you will not get told to get a 1010 and Sonar by 14 different people. Then if you do not like the Digi001, you might go for the 1010 and Sonar.

Good luck.

I love it too. I worked there during the design and implementation phase of the 001, and I've had several versions inluding prototypes, and I think the finished version is very nice. I've seen the output of the converters and the preamps up on scopes, and they compare favorably with everything else in the price range. The converters aren't apogees and the pres aren't neves, but if you can afford those then you wouldn't be buying it.

the digi user conference at http://duc.digidesign.com has some very good info.

The most irritating thing they did though was to make it look like a toy. What gives? Will my clients walkinto the studio and think I'm recording on my kids toys? DO I need to hide it in a cabinet and connect it to a patch bay. And for those who think people don't listen with thier eyes your wrong.

Joe E,

Can't really argue with you there...

On a different board, there was a thread of "X software vs Pro Tools" One of the arguments went... "if X software had a Pro Tools skin interface, clients would not know the difference and be just as happy."

So, yes, obviously people do listen with their eyes...

I have never had anyone comment that my Dig 001 and Glypgh Drive look like a toy..

Yes, people do listen with their eyes, which is why you need to explain to them "It looks mickey-mouse, but does the job awesome"

But...In my opinion, the looks should be the last thing your worrying about...

And, on the same token... Adats look like glorified 1980's circa VCR's... I HAVE had people say that in my studio, back when I had Adats....

Well, at the digi design store, you can get different colored face plates for your 001 for 20 bucks or so if its that big of a deal...
