Digi 001 or not?

I have a relatively new home/project studio. I currently own a Tascam 788 standalone recorder. It's been great and has really gotten me interested in recording. I'm now working with some outboard preamps, compressors, and have recently gotten a Tascam m-3500 24 channel board to go along with it. I've been recording onto the 788 (max of 4 inputs at a time) and then burning the wav files and editing and mixing on my computer. I've got an m-audio 24/96 card also. My computer is a athlon 2100+ that I built specifically for audio.

I've decided I want to move to DAW recording with at least 8 channels at once and the option to upgrade. I can get about 650 for my Tascam which would allow me to get the Digi 001 off ebay. I need to get the interface and the software for 650 or below. I've looked at the M-audio 1010 but it seems to have some stability problems. I am probably going to upgrade my computer from Windows 98se to XP in order to function better with Pro Tools. Stability is a big plus for me. I want to be able to have everything work how I need it after it's tweaked. I also realize that my typical client is in a way ignorant and will all of the sudden think it's great if I have Pro Tools. I know this because countless people have asked about it before.

With my budget and needs, would the Digi 001 be a good purchase in your opinion? I've heard all the MOTU talk and such, but it seems way out of my league. Also will I be able to trade .wav files between PT and Cool Edit Pro and N-tracks?

I would really appreciate some advice here. Thanks,
Jeremy

I used to have the 001 system. A lot of folks here still do and it's a fine setup for sure. But in my opinion, I think there are lots of options that would give more bang for your buck. I was using it in conjunction with a couple of ADATs. The plugins were way more expensive than their directX counterparts. I'm now using an HD24 witha MOTU 2408 to get tracks in and out of a PC. I'm not pushing the HD or the MOTU (but I can HIGHLY recomend it:D ) but there are a boatload of cards out there with eight ins and outs that would work with any number of software recorders (I use Cakewalk9 and Vegas) that will handle as many tracks as you have computer horsepower.

I've checked out the MOTU stuff....it looks tempting. After looking at everything, though, I think that I can get the digi 001 off ebay for less than any other similar MOTU setup, mainly because I'd still have to buy the software. I've also heard that MOTU has poor PC support.

One thing that really pushes me towards protools is the simple fact that it has name recognition and widespread use. If you have specific MOTU models or what not for the price, I'd like to hear. I'm thinking I can upgrade the digi001 to 16 inputs by getting one of those ADAT interface converters later on.

Thanks for the response,
Jeremy

The 001 is great. I use one right now on a PC with a Athlon XP chip (the only processor you want to run audio programs in my opinion) running on windows XP. Once you get used to Pro Tools software youll probablly give up cool edit too. Its acually very easy to learn yet very in depth software.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

i went from the the tascam 788 to the digi 001 and havent regretted one bit.just make sure your pc is up to the task.

I've got an Athlon XP 2100+ w/ 765 mb ram and a 40 gig and 80 gig hard drive. How many tracks should I be able to run (mixing/editing) at a time with minimal plugins?

Jeremy

I get 32 tracks with a couple plug-ins on each track and automation. This is maxed out though. Make sure you have the buffer size as high as it can go and also quit every other program on the comp. except Pro Tools. Make sure you are playing back from the drive on your comp. that isnt the system drive too.
