I want to buy a hard disk recording unit soon and I just can't make up my mind! I have a PC (P4 2.4 GHZ) not a Mac, and I've read everywhere that Pro Tools and MOTU drivers are wonky on the PC. I've also read that Pro Tool was coded for the Mac and ported to Windows.

I'm looking for a stable hardware/software solution for Windows that also works cross-platform. I also want to be able to export my work to lay down additional tracks in "real-deal" Pro Tools HD (Mac). Could I get suggestions for a good combination of Software/Hardware on an fairly entry-level budget. (96khz sampling rate would be great but I don't know if I can afford it!)

I use a motu 1224 (pci card) with my p4 2.4 and it works fine. I like the idea of expandability using the audiowire ports. I bought it for $500 before mars music went out business, but they can be found for similar prices (mostly less) on ebay.

P.S. - How many channels do you need?

Channels is an afterthought for me. What I need is sound quality, stability and the ability to port over to Pro Tools HD.

Since you need to transfer to Protools HD, why dont you stick with a protools/digidesign setup.

I'm also looking at matching up a Layla24 with an analog Mackie mixer. I'd like to get the sample rates at 96khz!
