Hello pples,

I'm considering getting either the studio projects C1 or B1 at this pt in time. The use will be mainly for rock/blues vocals, and occassionally fiddle (country style).

I want to know whether there's a significant difference between the 2 (aside from price! ;) ). I noticed the the C1 is a 6u mylar diapragm whilst the B1 is a 3u one. Will this affect the quality of recorded sound?

And if anyone has any opinions to add, I'll be more than happy!

Thanks a lot dudes!

Cheers!

Hi KB,

make a search at the mic forum... I think this has been extensively discussed for te past year...

I myself have a C1... love it!

I am hoping to add a B3 to my collection in the future....

Hey Leeking!

Yeah...I know...that was general laziness on my part...I shall now diligently search past posts for info on this! :)

The cheaper B1 is in fact more neutral than the C1. The C1 has an upper mid presence boost where the B1 has a flatter less colored response. The C1 also has greater proximity effect.

A simplistic analogy would be that if you took a B1 and equipped with a loudness button you would have something approximating a C1... thicker in the lows and more present in the highs.

On the right material the C1 would probably sound more impressive than the B1... but none-the-less the B1 is a very versatile mic who's performance exceeds it's price, and in many ways, is probably a little more versatile than the C1.

The B1 has a 3 micron diaphragm while the C3 has a 6 micron diaphragm. A thinner diaphragm will, all things considered, have a faster response than a thicker one... but this is not the whole story in relation to perceived sound quality. Someone like Stephen Paul is probably THE Guru in term's of custom capsule mods. He specialises in ultra thin diaphragms and this whole field is somewhat of a black art. So thinner is not the whole story on it's own. There are many other parameters to consider. The capsule's voicing is affected by a combination of diaphragm tension, thickeness, mass and type of material, gold sputtering etc.

Basically it depends on what your primary use for the mic is. If it is mainy vocals then the C1 wouldn't go astray. If it's a variety of sources you want to record then the B1 may be a little more universal in it's application. ;)

Cheers.

I have both of these in my arsenal. Pundits' post was right on the money. Great info!

In down and dirty layman’s terms; C1 is brighter, harsher, etc. Use it where you want brightness. B1 is warmer, darker... you get the idea.

Real life example; Just did a lead vox track with a C1, thought it was too bright and harsh. Singer had a hard edge to his voice. Re-tracked with a B1; just right!

For your applications, my vote is the B1 also.

Well I took the plunge and got a B1 guys....can't wait to try it out today.

Leeking: Bought it for SGD$195 and Sim Lim Square 3rd floor, at Hung Brothers. You know where it is? C1 is SGD$395. Hope this helps u...

Well, I own a B-1 and a C-3. I'd say the C-3 is "airbrushed" and the B-1 is "in your face". The C-3, while fairly accurate, is trying to flatter you. B-1 is "just the facts, ma'am".-Richie
