different tom mounting styles

Hi, wanted to know what the difference in sound is between a 1) tom that has a small hole cut into it to shove a tome arm through it, and 2) a tom that has no holes for arms, and has the exterior rim thing for an L-rod clamp. Which is better for sound purposes, and what is the difference in sound?(reason i want to know is ause im building my own drums, wnated to know which i should do) thanks!

Well, you are better off having a smaller hole in the drum if you are going to mount the mount directly to the shell.
If you are going to use either a RIMS type of mount, or a Pearl Isolation mounting system-you will have a TON of sustain, and more bottom end.

The reason so many companies have gone to isloation mounting (no rod through the drum) is to allow the drum to vibrate better which equates to more resoance and sustain.

Which makes sense - if a piece of wood has a piece of metal poking through it it simply can vibrate as much.

Im a fan of having no holes in the Drums....


But im sort of newer to Acoustic Drumming, so my opinion isn't educated....


I really like a 4 piece kit and the upper tom is on a stand, sort of like a snare stand but bigger...

Therefore, you need no holes in your bass drum either..
