Difference Between Type 1 and Type II Tape

Can Type I casset tapes be played on the Tascam 488 PortaStudio. The information I found on this website states Type II High Bias Tape is recommeded and I'm trying to play Type I and my recorder won't work in the play or record mode. Could this be the problem? :confused:
 
Go to a store a buy a type II cassette to see if that makes it work.

IE; TDK SA60 or Maxell XL II 60

Ordinarily, a type I should play but have exaggerated highs and more noise then a type II. They also require more frequent head cleaning as they shed oxide faster then type II cassettes.
