What's the difference between an SM57 and an SM58, and is it worth spending out on an SM57 if you already own a couple of SM58's (as i do)?

They have exactly the same capsule - difference is in the casing iteself, the ball windscreen, and the distance from the windscreen to the capsule....... remove the windscreen from a 58 and you essentially have the 57......

Superb, thanks. Just as i thought, and thats exactly what i've been doing with my 58 when i've been miking up guitar cabs. I had to buy the 58's for live vocal use.
Much appreciated as i'm a little less novice now.
Thanks

Doesn't the 57 drop down in the bottom to about 40 Hz (as opposed to 50 Hz on the 58)? I guess that's just a spec as I've never noticed a major difference in sound, but I always use a 57 for micing amps.

i beleive that is because of the windscreen. (proximity effect)

Sm57 = Sm58

Foreverain4 is correct, they're the same. I use an SM57 for amps/cabinets, then use it with a pop screen if I use it for vocals. Which, by the way, I rarely do -- ever since I purchased an MXL 67G. The latter mic is about the same price, but FAR, FAR better for vocals and acoustic guitar. (I tried both at the same time for a single track...the difference is pretty extreme!)
