I know that the more expensive version (24-8) has the eight busses, but other then that waht are the differences?

Is one sonically better then the other?

Hello...

I actually had (still have, just don't use) the mackie sr 24x4 which is a nice console... and I currently have a mackie 32x8 bus. The eq section on the 8 bus is much more comprehensive (http://www.mackie.com/Products/8Bus/images/8BusChStrp.JPG) additionally, the 8 bus is an "in line" design, meaning that each channel strip has two inputs... which is very nice, so you can use a channel strip for instruments as well as have the coorisponding track from the recorder input as well which makes play back after performance a lot simpler... and space-saving (I had to divide up my inputs on the sr 24).

I would say... save up the extra $$$ and get the 8 bus, because it provides a great deal of scalability.

I hope this helps a little.

well thank you very much for the feedback. I am borrowing a 32x8 for a big project right now and indeed these are much better boards. Definitely worth the extra money.

I almost got a mackie 24x8 for $1300 on ebay but it was 1:30am an I feel asleep during the last 10 minutes of bidding and got beat by ten bucks!! arggg!!! :D

Uhhu...

... But remember the pres in the 8-Bus SUCK!!! I'd use an VLZ PRO pre over an 8-Bus pre ANY day... Of course, if you have enough outboard pres, you don't have to worry about it! It still boggles my mind WHY they don't use VLZ PRO pres in their 8-Bus yet. I e-mailed them once about it and they said they would "eventually"...

I would somewhat agree with your statement... the mic pre's do leave me a bit "wanting" especially at high spl... things tend to get a bit "thin"

and i would NEVER (ever) recommend compensating for that using EQ... but what is so nice is the availability of inexpensive mic pre's that are pretty good. I am hoping to get the Behringer T1953 when it finally ships (i think at the end of august).

Most of my recording is done direct in any case (drums are clavia's ddrum4, guitar is j-station, bass is pod and j-station)... and my girlfriend does vocals through a Rode nt2 into the mackie...what was my point? oh yeah.... I believe the mackie 8 bus's weakness in the pre's are far more out weighed by the flexibility of the console, the sweet eq (for the money) and the overall quality of construction.

Heh heh... and it also looks pretty sweet in an Argosy 7032 enclosure :-)

yeah I go into outboard preamps first then straight to adats. So no problem. Thanks for that info.
