Can anyone explain the differences between these two drives...looking to purchase one where I can record audio from my Pc and make copies of other cds.

Any help would be appreciated!

Which is best?

All you need to do what you want is a CD-R. CD-RW's give you the option of using special (and more expensive) rewritable disks that you can write to more than once. If you don't use the special disks than CD-RW's are no different from CD-R's.

Other things to keep in mind about CD-RW are:
** that they won't play in a regular CD player, even if they were written with the same data as an audio CD.

** the disc makers only guarantee the discs for 1000 read/write cycles.

** they don't come formatted- this is a rather lengthy operation.

BUT: The price ratio between CD-RW and CDR has shrunk since their first introduction.
When I bought my first CDRW drive, CDRW blanks were $15 - $17 and CDRs were $2. Now CDRWs are $3 and CDRs are $1. Both of course are available cheaper in bulk quantities.

actually , good luck finding just a cd-r .. i was in the same situation you were in about 2 months ago... and i only wanted a cd-r , but i couldnt find one , so i bought a cd-rw and boy am i glad i did.. even if you just use the cd-rw for backing up , its worth it.. its a waste to throw out used back up cd-r's weekly... with a cd-rw , you just write over them the next week..

also , a cd-rw burns to regular auido and data cd-rs just as well as a cd-r would.. drstawl wasnt telling you to not get a cd-rw , he was just telling you more specifics of it... if you need to rush out and get a cd burner asap with out researching more , get a cd-rw..if not...youll be kicking yourself in the ass eventually...

ps - even if you find a cd-r , its a small price difference than that of a cd-rw..
