What do you guys prefer and why when it comes to rims...
die cast or triple flange metal rims? Do you feel a difference in the head of the tom when playing; do you hear a significant difference in live or recording situations?

What's your take?

Generally speaking, die cast rims are better suited for snares as opposed to toms. DC rims increase attack but take away resonance. If you have a nice maple kit, you might not be best suited with DC. If you hit rimshots often, DC rims can rip up your sticks as they come off the head a bit higher than TF. DC rims work great with metal shells. Some claim that drums are easier to tune with DC and that they are less susceptable to bend. I think it would be a crime to put DC rims on say a DW set. However, they can be very effective on say a brass snare. Triple flange hoops are the industry standard for a reason.

I feel the same way - I have die cast hoops on my snare, but I have 2.3mm Triple flanged hoops on my toms. the 1.6mm hoops tend to bend a little too much for me.
The problem with die cast hoops is that they aren't very forgiving - if you don't tune the drum very evenly - you can permanently warp the hoop.

yes, totally agree.

I like 2.3 tri-flange hoop for everything.

It's all a matter of personal taste. I like Triple Flanged hoops on all my drums. I never liked die cast too much, unless it's a lighter vintage Gretsch hoop.

die cast and triple flanged

Can someone please explain the difference between die cast and triple flange hoops to me? thanks.
