I have a Mackie 1604 and want to run four floor monitors. The manual shows Aux 1 send -> power amp-> monitors. I'm assuming I need to run 2 monitors per side of the amp, making the load 4 ohm per side. How do I come in mono and out stereo on a stereo amplifier?? Am I making sense?

Thanks in advance

I am not sure of the question, are you using a separate stereo monitor amp? If so:

When thinking of this stuff, think 2 x mono amps not stereo. The Stereo amp is being used as 2 Mono amps, each side of the amp running 2 monitors in mono. Form a single source (1 aux send) the signal from the send has to go to bothe sides of the stereo (duel mono) amp. Then connect 2 monitors to each side of the amp.

Hope I got the question right.

Cheers

Thanks for responding!

So, do I then connect a Y to the aux 1 send out on the mixer and go into each side of the stereo amp?

If what I am thinking is what you are trying to do;

Yes

Some amps have a input link option or an in/out (link) on each input so a patch lead can be used to link inputs. I have racked all my amps with linking options so I can quickly patch up amps for any situation.

What make/model amp is it?

Thanks witzendoz for your time!

I have a Peavey pv1200 that has a "two-channel mono mode" which is what I think you mean where I come in on A, connect A to B and can use both speaker outputs. Every other power amp seems to be as you said, 2X mono amps.

I don't want to bridge as with 4 monitors, I'll be at 2ohms and I don't want to buy two amps for monitors.

What confused me is the mackie manual shows aux 1 send going to monitors and aux 2 send going to monitors. I guess I could put 1 into one side of amp and 2 into the other, but would have two different knobs for monitors which could be confusing...

Am I missing something?? I realize this is a recording forum, but I didn't know where else to ask.

That would give you 2 seperate monitor mixes which can be extremely handy. Bassist and drummer would share one mix and rest of the band would share the other.

Yes it would, but in my case I'm only monitoring vocals and we all need to hear everyone.

the ideal way to set up would be the aux 1/2 method which would give you two monitor mixes. I prefer that because I like to have only vox in my monitors while my drummer usually likes a lot of bass in his. Anyhow, if that is too confusing, just run your entire mix mono and use the right side for the mains and the left for the monitors. Then adjust accordingly. Start out with everything panned right. Then when you need something in the monitor, slowly pan it toward the center until it is adjusted properly for your taste. It is a bit archaic, but it keeps things simple. If you just want one mix, I would really advise to just use aux 1 and get used to it that way, it really is simple in the end.

Correct, using the 2 Aux sends, 1 to each side of the amp, you can set it up as 2 monitor mixes. I did not suggest it at the time as I did not know you had 2 x aux sends available. 2 monitor mixes are handy when different performers want different voices/instruments louder or softer in their monitors.

However if you using a graphic eq between the aux send and the amp to eq the monitors you will need one graphic for each aux send.

I also run the Aux pre fader/eq as the mix/eq that is wanted in the monitors is not always what is wanted in the front PA.
