hey deadleafecho

you work for dell?

any word on if inspirons will be available with 7200 rpm harddrives any time soon?

after looking around and "customizing" systems on various sites, building is starting to look appealing to get one that's exactly what one will need for audio.

thanks!

XP 1800

athlon all the way baby...

some people (WATYF for sure) from around these parts really helped point me in the right direction as to at the very least good reading material ;) .

I took it from there and built the machine myself. In the process I got exactly what I wanted. I was really tempted for awhile to go buy a machine ready made, but after finding out that most of the components were generic i decided otherwise.

Its probably one of the best things i ever did.

The one and only gripe that I have with it, is that it still makes noise

:D . The only way around this I believe is either cooling without fans, or one hell of an isolation box. Oh well you cant have everything!!!

Dude, your gettin a cell! (Steven got busted buying pot)

Well, since the Dell people are apparently all on drugs, I build my own computers, and have been for the last fourty years, give or take.

Is there a specific site(s) out there regarding building a system for audio?

Also, is that static they always talk about while touching your internal components in your tower true? or is it just a buncha-shit? Seems to me that "experts" say that so you wont build your own system thereby keeping the experts employed. Of course i would hate to find out the hard way if its true!
Just my $.02.

Built my last two (with a little help along the way).

Yes, the static thing is true - if you are carrying a charge and touch the wrong thing, you will explode, leaving nothing but a green stain on the carpet.

Okay, so it's not that bad, but you can ruin chips I do believe - pretty easy work-around though - either stay grounded (with one of those kooky writst straps) or ground yourself often on the case chassis. No biggie.

Kinda half-bought (bare bones with case, chip, and fans) and half-built (video, memory, etc) my current Athlon XP 2100 system.

Static is real, but no worries if you wear a $5 wrist strap from the Shack.

And (my suggestion) a very cool bulletproof rack mount case.

I think a rackmount PC sounds very cool. Can you point me to a site where I can find these cases cheap? The only ones I've seen were pretty expensive. Thanks.

If you feel sure enough of yourself (or have someone near that can give you some pointers) do it yourself.

Else find a small shop that will build one for you with your spec. They are everywhere and not expensive if you do not ask to install soft and drivers.

Made 4 until now, all running!

Built mine myself.

Athlon xp1600,512mb ddr ram,ATI rage 32mb video,Terratec ews88d audio cards. WD Caviar 7200 rpm 20gig and 40 gig drives.

yep

built mine 2 days ago. it's pretty easy man. and you get parts that are good, not crap integrated junk on a assembly line computer. mine cost 400 bucks.

XP 1700+
ASUS A7N266-VM AA w/vid and sound
512 crucial ddr 2100
80 gig seagate
52x burner LITE - ON
fan

already had case and monitor

it's easy man. i knew NOTHING about computers, but i did research and learned on the internet for about a month. just read up on topics and parts. www.overclockers.com is a good place to get info.

the comp is fast. so dang fast. no overclock, running at 1466mHz.

BUILD!!!!

peace man

Bought my first one, then I cannibalized it for parts and basically built a new one.

IMO build your own, its actually cheaper and more cost effective in the long run. Just dont forget to keep all the warrantees for the parts so you can actually blame someone if a part explodes or something.

Oh, and do you research... thats what the Net is for.

If anyones thinking of building their first computer, this site was great for me.
http://www.pcmech.com/build.htm
They also have a forum with a bunch of folks that helped me out a lot.
I'll never buy a computer from a store again.
