Did tutorial, all i got was hissing noise

i hooked my yamaha yp-60 up to my computer, gotten it to work on reason so i know it works on my comp. So im running through the tutorial on cubase sx, did all the setup things like assigning busses to my piano, and all that other VSt stuff. When it told me to play on my piano to test sound levels and to start recording notes, all i get is a hissing noise that is like 1 second on, 1 second off, but gradually gets louder, and this only happens when i select [monitor on]. I dont know whats going wrong with this program. Even if i dont have any instruments selected in whatever audio channel i have, shouldnt i still be able to play a default sound or something when i play on my piano? is this uncontrollable cresendoing hiss normal?
 
Sounds as though, you don't have the correct inputs selected for your Piano on the Audio channel, and at the same time the input that is active is looping back the output when monitored (Feedback Loop). Is your device setup properly in the Devices menu (Proper drivers etc.)? What hardware are you using? Check the VST connections windows to be sure what Hardware is currently being used (And what name Cubase uses for the inputs/outputs matches what you are physically using).
 
im using that internal audigy2zs drive with my piano. it works fine, as i said it has worked flawlessly on reason. no, its something wrong with cubase. in the main window i chose "add audio track" and it gave me that weird noise, but then i tried "add midi track" and it works fine. what the hell is an audio track for if i cant play my piano on that as well?

also a second Q: why is ffdshow, ac3 filter, and my midi port showing up under the [add fx track > directx] along with abysnth? why is it when i open absynth it doesnt respond to my piano?

An audio track is for audio. A midi track is for midi. You need to take some time to read the manual or you'll end up a frustrated wreck.
 
has anyone worked with those guide books you get a barnes n noble? are they helpful? ive browsed through the reason one, seemed pretty helpful.
 
I'm reading the one for Cubase Sx/Sl and it's great. It comes with a tutorial on disk.
