Here's a simple question...

what's the difference b/t my Boss CS3 Sustain/Compressor pedal ($70) and a rack-mounted compressor? the Boss manual says it will work for any electronic signal...will it be effective, then, for vocals?

(ps - i'm not looking for a perfectly produced sound and I have a limited budget)

Yes, it will work. It won't be clean, but it might give you something you like. So try it.

When you're ready for something better, the FMR RNC sells for about $170. The consensus is that it's the best compressor available for under $1,000.

Buddy Holly had natural compression by hitting analog tape with a hot signal causing it to saturate.

I've used a Boss comp. pedal to record vocals before. To me it's cool if your looking for a really squashed, lo-fi sound but even on the lowest settings it's still pretty severe for most uses.

Buddy also had old tube consoles going into those tape machines. No compression required.;)

High !

RNC stands for really nice compressor. Accordings to ALL reviews it's great... Alas I don't own one :(

BTW, I read that compression exists since the early days of radio, so buddy holly should have had one...

Yep,this is a newer model, but Buddy Holly had a compressor just like this one here

:D :D :D :D :D :D

If you want a vintage sounding compressor, a Joe Meek is excellent for
rock and roll. The RNC is prized for its transparency-lack of color!
(Yes I have both)

P.S. Huge Buddy Holly fan BTW.
