My band's bass player had his amp flake out (and there's not enough money available to replace it yet).

The bass is a Fender Squire 2.

Tried just connecting the bass into the line in on my mixer (Yamaha MG10/2) via 1/4" but that produced a much different sound (sterile, thin, uninteresting).

Are there any devices that combine DI with amp modeling?

What DI would you recommend?
Is the Behringer DI100 (http://www.behringer.com/DI100/index.cfm?lang=ENG) OK for this?

His favorite bass players are John Entwhistle (The Who) and John Deacon (Queen) if that helps in the recommendation.

thanks

Plugging a guitar or bass into a Line In connector on a mixer will usually produce poor results. A line in connection is usually for a much hotter signal that one would get from most guitars.

The Behringer DI box would probably work well. The output result should go to a mic input on the board where the gain, and EQ cab be adjusted for best sound from the bass.

Sans Amp

The Sans Amp DI is sweet, but no replacement for an amp. I would get one anyway and use it for recording and before the amp in live setups. The Sans Amp doesn't do modeling but it does make your rig sound SWEET!!

I have a DI100. Does its job, no more, no less but it's collecting dust here.
I also have a Sansamp Bass Driver DI. Got it hooked up permanently. Loving it. Can't afford a big rig. This is probably the next best thing.

He needs a real bass amp and or preamp. I have a SansAmp bass driver... and it's ok for a cheap little stomp box... but it's nothing like the real thing. Your bass player needs to spend more $ if they want the sound/tone.
