DI - Direct Inject question

I have a Laney bass combo amp that has an XLR Direct Inject (DI) feature - I am a little unclear as to what this does but I assume I can run the amp straight into my Tascam US122 Audio Interface w/ an XLR cord and record on the computer capturing the amp's sound without actually having to mic the amp externally. Is this correct? Because I do home recording, this is preferable so I am not waking up roomates and neighbors (very professional, i know), and I'm not having to go through any preamps besides the US122.

Given my assumption above is correct: I would like to do something similar on my electric gutar - find a good guitar amp with the Direct Inject feature and record into the US122. Looking around online, I am only seeing this feature on bass amps and not with guitar amps. What am I missing? Does this even matter for what I am doing?

Thanks,
E

Yes, that direct output XLR jack on the back of your amp is provided so that you can use the EQ and preamping features of your bass head without going thru a cabinet. It should be at line level so it should match well with your interface.

Also, you are in luck having the Tascam US122, because that has a hi-z jack to plug your guitar or bass straight into and make the signal available to a program like NI Guitar Rig or IK's Amplitube.

That is good to know, thanks. Why am I not finding any guitar amps with the Direct Inject feature? Basically I need a new guitar amp anways so I was hoping to kill two birds here.

Thanks
