DI box question

I just got a DI box for use with my delta 66. I was under the impression that I could plug a mic or a guitar directly into it and to the delta and have the correct levels. I don't.

Do I still need to go into a preamp from the direct box, then into the delta 66? I still have to crank up the preamp pretty good to get good levels. I'm ust trying to figure out the most direct route into the delta, for the least noise etc.

A DI box adapts the impedances. It doesn't raise the levels. For that you need a preamp. If the preamp on the Delta 66 is good enough you will do fine with just a DI box.
