I have used a Mackie dfx12 for about three years.. Using the real time analyzer and or actually scoping the insets the pres pass all the specs. However there has never been enough gain. Currently running sm 58 and using dbx266xl compressor. With the pre gains at 3p that is crowding headroom and above that tends towards feedback.. I dont like ti run any amp at unity but even with the gain on the 266xl higher than 0db out the mic faders are close to 0 db ..
I have been considering buying a real tube preamp and running into the inserts (rewiring so to keep the insert function).. Has anybody done this with the mackie or any other mixer? I could build a better preamp with more stages and actually hard wire it inside the mixer. Opinions?
