designated music computer

I am about to get another computer and use it solely for my music production and recording purposes. I would like to know if it is possible to strip it of any and all unnecessary programs that will rob it of memory while recording. I will have another computer for all of my internet, etc etc...


btw, the computer will have windows 98

My personal choice would be to not opt for a lighter operating system, but instead get a 'heavier' computer. (faster CPU, more RAM, HD speed/space)
Right now on my DAW/internet box under Win98, 1st edition is running:
Netscape, Windows Explorer, PGPtray, Systray and Echocon. When I record I simply close Netscape. No Big Deal.
