howdee all

uhmm, let's see...

well to start with, i'm a seventeen year old who sits at home and writes songs, on guitar and keyboard.

I got me a (VERY VERY) basic 4-track (it's the MF-P01 from tascam - doesn't it stand for 'My First- Portastudio 01'?, anyway...)
and i have some things recorded on it.

But the thing is, i'd like to send these tapes off to big bossy A&R people sometime, but i'm afraid they won't even consider tapes, and esepcially tapes with particularly low production quality. This is all i've got, i can't afford anything else! no time in studio! no new posh tascam! *breaks down in tears*

But, to compose myself, will anyone really listen to a 4 song demo tape, written, played and recorded by one person:

[pretentious bit]
Me.

Ideally, the music is for a band, i didnt write them for other people, i wrote them to be performed by me and a band.
[/pretentious bit]

I don't even own a bass for chrissakes, i just turn the treble down on my amp! God, how pathetic does it sound in writing!?

And the drums are just frickin' loops off of my Casio keyboard!

Ah God! I've wasted my life...!

Anyone care to help poor ole me?

uhh.. try to save up for a cheap computer. U can record nice stuff at good quality and make a cd for cheap. But if ur good, youre gonna make it even if you dont have money.

study up....you just described about 2/3rds of all the members here...lol...well except the "17" part for which i am EXTREMELY bitter about ....naa...this is the place ...

and no , some a/r person wont listen to your crap uninvited that is.....

BUT the good news is....if music is what you are ...then music is what you will do ..REGARDLESS of who may or may not hear you.

post some stuff in the mp3 clinic ..or better yet go listen and see what im talkin about...its chuck full-o- bedroom superstars!.

welcome aboard........

hang on ...

Jamal.:D

Shit. You're 17. Got your whole life in front of you!

I'm 36, have fairly nice equipment, play gigs, and still no A&R contacts!

howdee again

thanks everyone, i think i'll mosey over to the MP3 clinic placey, really though, im useless on computers and things like that. sigh!

I'll let you know if i do actually progress any further.

Ah yeah, one other thing...

the music i write tends to leap wildly from genre to genre. This morning, i found a nice little folky sort of run, but recently, i've been devling into the more proggish noise area...

If i WERE to send my tape, CD, etc to an A&R blokey, would it be better to group styles of songs, or just give it everything....?

Cheers again, good luck with your respective aims

Most record companies don't even listen to unsolicited demos so I wouldn't worry about it.

Get yourself a band and make it happen.

That's what we're here for. We're all learning an teaching. Really, if you save just a little bit of cash, you could get yourself a cheap or used computer, a decent "starter" soundcard (like a Delta), and a nice mic or two. Check eBay for prices.

Play what you like and don't worry about "fitting in" to a particular genre. If you do it well, people will listen.
My CD jumps from genre to genre, rock, blues, Latin, surf-punk, etc.
