Hi! I'm a beginner mixer and recorder. I have some basic knowledge on recording equipment and theory. So here's the problem: My band-mate and I just recorded some improvisational songs. I was very proud of the entirety of what we did; however, the reason I was recording was to go back and write down the lyrics, as I prefer to write the lyrics over the riff - like most. We recorded the entirety of these tracks on one single recording. It was more or less a full-fledged jam session and unfortunately we're unequipped for multi-track recording - we currently only have one recording device; granted we could've recorded all of the tracks through the single device, but again we were improvising. Anyway due to all of our inadequacies the lyrics are kinda muddy and I can't seem to up the vocals through an EQ - with my skills. I was wondering if anyone could help me out in anyway possible. I've definitely learned my lesson about relying on poor equipment and we're trying to get a good PA system. Thanks!

PA system or recording system?

There is much you can do to improve both your live setup and have ability to record as well.

You just first need to define what it is exactly you need/want to do first. What are you intending to record? How many individual tracks would you like to record at once? What are you recording as far as instruments or 'full-fledged jam session'?

You're just trying to boost the vocals on your recording so you can hear them better and write them down? If they're drowned out by the other instruments being played, then EQ would really be your only option. Sweep for frequencies that when boosted help the vocals cut through.

So, what we're looking at is a guitar, a live drum set, and a mic. I would definitely appreciate some help on what equipment I'll need. So if you could maybe advise some beginner stuff. We're looking at a budget of under 2,000.

Yeah. Sorry if my explanation was a bit broken or inadequate. I discovered this site at one o'clock in the morning and posted this somewhere around that. So, again, I have tried using the EQ on audacity to do that and it didn't really work. If you could maybe direct me to better software for using an EQ or tell me what I need to boost and what I need to turn down, help me, that would be awesome!

I'm quite new to all this, go figure, so I'm not really sure how to perfectly use the EQ. Every time I boosted the vocal range I got a lot of hi hat crap and couldn't hear it quite well. Thanks for your reply, and more would definitely be amazing!

You're doing it right, you're just not going to have much luck doing anything else to try to hear the vocals better.
