First off, the basis of my system

P4 2.4G
Sonar 3.1
Tascam488mkII

I'm getting interested in buying a Delta1010LT, to transfer older cassette based recordings to the PC, and then

beyond. But I'm finding I have a few questions on soundcards and monitoring before I purchase.

1) The PC currently has a soundcard capable of 5.1 playback.
Does this soundcard get removed when the Delta gets installed?
Or as long as I have an open PCI slot (which I do) does the Delta just get installed and 2 cards co-exist peacefully?

I currently run a pair run-of-the-mill powered computer speakers+subwoofer, so I don't exactly use nearfield monitors; as a result here's the next round of questions.

2) If both soundcards are installed, do I take the 'monitor outs' from the Delta and go to the 'line-in' in the existing soundcard?
3) Or would I just plug in my existing speaker combination into the 'monitor outs' from the Delta?
4) Are there any other monitoring aspects (that I didn't mention) that I need to consider before purchase?

Thanks to all who reply

1) The original soundcard does not get uninstalled. Whether or not they coexist peacefully depends on what you're trying to do.

2) Don't know why you'd want to do this. Maybe you could explain.

3) This would be a better choice (just use the Delta and disable the original in the BIOS)

4) The Delta control panel will be a little (maybe a lot) confusing at first, but read the manual and always try to realize what's going on routing-wise.

You should not need your original soundcard after installing the Delta. You would not usually be able to use them both in a given host (e.g. Sonar, Cubase) together. If for some reason you need system sounds (notifications, Windows Media) to be monitored from the old card and your recording to be monitored from the new you could try both, but I'd suggest going with the Delta only and making that work for you.

What's the beyond?? You certainly don't need that many inputs to record old cassettes.

It doesn't need to be removed. Computers can and do work with multiple sound cards.

Ideally, yes. This is not always the case out of the box however, and you might need to do some reconfiguration, moving of PCI slots, etc. until they play nice together. Sometimes it's easy, and sometimes it's not. :) .

I currently run a pair run-of-the-mill powered computer speakers+subwoofer, so I don't exactly use nearfield monitors; as a result here's the next round of questions.

No!

I don't know that the Delta has "monitor outs," but essentially the answer is yes. You can connect the speakers to the Delta's outputs if you want to use the Delta for playback.

4) Are there any other monitoring aspects (that I didn't mention) that I need to consider before purchase?

I have both card in my PC...mixing and monitoring (SONAR) audio in/out using the Delta1010LT. Computer/Windows sounds and other playback devices or applications running through the Audigy SB.

Both cards live nicely together.

Thanks for the responses, they helped to clear up some things. I just get unreasonably nervous when dealing with the equipment purchases. I've been able to check out some of the Delta's documentation through websites, so hopefully soon I'll be a multitracking fool. Thanks again.

Delta 1010

I have one . It works great. I record all tracks to my trusty Teac 8 track then dump down to Sonar 3 . Easy as eating pie. No problems anywhere.

Oh yeah.....forgot.

Just read the the short manual. It has a couple of small tutorials that are very helpful.

Just make sure your volume is turned done. Hah!!!!! I think my ears are still ringing.
