I'm just about to buy myself an m-audio omni-studio for recording. There are two headphone outs on the omni-box. I know good headphones demand a headphone-amp. Do I need a seperate amp to power those headphones or can I connect them directly to the omni? In other words, are the headphone outs also headphone amps?

To the best of my knowledge....

You shouldn't need a seperate headphone amp. Headphone amps are usually used in a situation where you need more then one pair of headphones coming out of one headphone jack.

If you only need one extra set of cans to work with, you can buy a very inexpensive 1/4" patch plug; I have a couple of them in the studio -- they do make these plugs in stereo.

I use a Peavy little can amp with 4 inserts. I never have used more than two, me and the vocalist, but once in a while the "boyfriend" wants to listen to his investment sing. The less folks around when I'm working the better for me.

Yo Green Hornet!

I'm about to get a pair of headphones also and I've read you like beyer cans. I got an incredible deal on the DT 250 and the DT 770 PRO. What's the difference? I can get them for about the same price (a 15$ difference). I want to use them for tracking and checking mixes.

BTW thanks for the tip about the patch-plug!

Yo Swede:

Glad to help out with the patch plug. You might also want to check out a little unit sold by Musician's Friend, I believe, that is a graphite tool for cleaning 1/4 inch plugs and 1/4 plug-in openings. I found this to really help reducing the "tug" when inserting and removing 1/4 inch plugs.

As to the Beyer cans, I would say you will enjoy either the 250's or 770's; however, I prefer the 250's. They are less boomy in the low end and seem to fit on the skull better -- they are not as tight.

Enjoy,
