hi, i record alternative/ post hardcore in my study. i have been doing this for about a year and am trying to improve my sound quality and recording options. Currently i have:
KRK Rokit 5's
Studio Projects B1
M Audio AudioBuddy
Guitars

I am using my motherboards stock sound card to record d although getting pretty usable recordings it only has 2 inputs and is noisy. I am thinking about getting a new soundcard, i am wanting to record drums so i believe i need 4 analogue inputs (at least). The best option so far seems to be the delta 66, because its cheap, highly regarded and has the bonus of 2 extra channels if i ever need them. So i went into turnkey (a music store) today where i was told by the salesman that the delta 44 and 66 had been discontinued and are absolete. So is he correct? or should i just go with the 66?? :)
*Sorry that was a bit long*

They're highly stable, mature drivers, decent sound and now very cheap. Get one. If you don't need SPDIF digital, get the Delta 44.

Alternatively you can go for one of the firewire or USB 2.0 options which are a little more pricey still for anything that sounds half-decent.

In this case, "it's obsolete" is most likely sales-speak for "I'm out of stock, but I don't want you to leave the store without buying something."

The Delta 66 is a nice card and can be found used for very cheap (I recently bought one for $100). The PCI bus format is going to eventually go away, but that probably won't happen for at least another 4-5 years, so I think "obsolete" is a stretch. There really isn't anything else at that pricepoint offering the same quality. FireWire cards are very popular now, but tend to cost quite a bit more than PCI. I have yet to see any soundcards offered in PCIe (the replacement technology for PCI) format...nor have I seen any computers exclusively with PCIe.

I've been using the Delta 44 (same as 66 but w/o SP/DIF) since 2000 and it has yet to fail me! It does everything I want it to; Just 4 balanced +4 line inputs and outputs. No mediocre preamps, no MIDI (which I don't use/need), no headphone jack, no blinking lights, no surround output, no speaker output. I love it!

This is the second time in as many weeks I've heard one of the Delta cards referred to as 'obsolete'. (In fairness in this case it was just a question).

I think DonF nailed it. ;)

thanks, thats really reassuring. I think i will go for it :)

That's exactly why I bought and still have a Delta 44!!! :)

Although I'm currently upgrading to get to 16 i/o ... yikes!

I use a 66 with the Omni breakout box - nice kit. Works with PT M-Powered too.

I'm using the 66 as well. Definitely get it. I was able to find it on MF.

I think the obsolete thing is premature too. Its days are numbered, but the countdown has only just begun. The PCI bus will be around for a few more years. This is the same thing that happened to ISA, and I seem to remember that took a while.
