I ordered a delta 44, and I was wondering. Can I plug headphones straight into the output of the soundcard? If not, do I just need a headphone amp? or do I need a mixer and a headphone amp?

No, you'll need to output back to a mixer or an amplifier, or a set of active speakers with a headphone jack

I've used a string of adapters and a Y-adapter to plug headphones directly into the Delta without a problem. It sounded perfectly good.

The volume and sound quality will depend largely on the impedance load the headphones present.

In each outputs 1 and 2 I put in a mono 1/4"->RCA adapter. From there a Y-adapter that was dual mono RCA->stereo 1/4". Plugged headphones into stereo 1/4".

Is this really OK?

I just got a Delta 66 and have been planning to do something similar to this adapter approach albeit skipping the RCA by using a Y-cable that has 2 1/4" mono plugs into a single stereo 1/4" jack that I will plug my headphones into. Preliminary results seem satisfactory from a sound standpoint, but do I risk damaging any components using this approach? Is there any other reason why this sounds like a bad idea? I read through the archives and while this approach does not seem to be very popular, I couldn't find anything conclusive indicating why this is a bad idea. Thanks for your help!

BTW... I just plan to use this for monitoring playback as a "family friendly" alternative to my BX5's. If I need to monitor recording I'll use an external mixer or some other such solution.
