delta 44 monitoring

hello everyone... i just got a delta 44 and i have hooked it up and got the 4 ins recording separately in cakewalk sonar 2... awesome... was a very exciting moment after only having one channel to record a drum set with 10 mics on it...

well now i want to be able to monitor while recording and am curious as to how i use the 4 outs... i understand that each channel is mono, but i am curious as to how i can listen (in stereo) to the 4 channels coming in all at the same time... do i have to have line-outs for each line-in i have going on or is there a way to simply plug in one for a left channel and one for a right channel and getting the complete mix? sorry for not speaking more technically... thanks!

I've been using a delta44 for quite some time now, so maybe I can help you out. First of all, do you have a mixer or a headphone amp or something like that? Here's what I do.

First of all, you have to set up your outs from your delta in your software. I use cubase, so in the VST connections, I set up outs 1/2 and 3/4 to be 2 sets of stereo outs.

I run out 1 to my left powered monitor and out2 to my right powered monitor, so I have my monitors in stereo.

Outs 3/4 are run into my mixer, so I use the heaphone out on my mixer to monitor in stereo while I'm playing.

There's another thread where somebody had this question and I tried to help him out. . . let me see if I can find it.

i'm running the snare and kick into their own channel (mono) and then mixing the toms and cymbals into the other two channels (one left & one right - stereo)... so that's my 4 ins...

so you're saying i can run line-out 1 & 2 as left and right channels for the entire mix? and what are you running those other two line-outs into on your mixer? thanks so much for your help...

I'll tell you exactly what I've got for gear.

M-Audio DMP-3 dual mic pre-amp
Behringer MX2004a mixer (so I can definately help you out with that)
Delta44 card
Event PS5 powered studio monitors
Mic's and instruments (various)

Here's my chain
Input: Source -> DMP3 -> delta44 -> computer
Output: Delta44 out 1 -> Left event monitor
Delta44 out 2 -> Right even monitor
Delta44 out 3 -> I stick it in the 2004a channel 7, panned hard L
Delta44 out 4 -> into channel 8, panned hard R

If you go from your delta into the mixer like that, you can monitor through the headphone out in the mixer.

Your krk monitors should work just like my event ps5's. We have quite a similar set-up.

Another option would be to use your outs 3/4 and go into your headphone amp. I've never used headphone amp, but to get a stereo mix, you'd have to have L and R 1/4" inputs on the headphone amp.

You also have to set up your card in your software, making outs 1/2 a stereo out and outs 3/4 another stereo out.

I checked out your headphone amp, and you've got a stereo 1/4" input on it, so you could run outs 3/4 from your delta into those inputs and get a stereo heaphone mix.

That way you wouldn't have to mess with running your sound back into your mixer to use it for headphone use. You could do it either way.

Running your outs into your mixer ties up channels 7 and 8, so if you use all 8 channels of your mixer as inputs, you'd want to go with the headphone amp route.

Ethan, I read your article about recording with a computer and a mixer. Very helpful stuff - I didn't know that you could plug half-way into an insert on the back of a mixer and use it like a splitter.

Very well written and easy to understand.

I run the 1/4 outs(delta 44) to (behringer control room) rca inputs then, out to my headphone amp. works great(hope that made sense in & out & in & out & in & out....... ) rememeber it's only a machine
