I'm using a Delta 44 with xp. When I import an audio file into cakewalk and select asio it makes a big difference compared to files played with winamp or media player.. Is winamp using the wdm drivers? If so can I use asio with winamp?

I don't understand, what kind of a difference? Winamp has an EQ, are you using one of the weird presets or something?

I don't think you can use ASIO drivers with regular audio programs like Winamp, I'm pretty sure they only use WDM. However there should be no audible difference in the actual audio, whether played back with ASIO or WDM drivers. You may prefer ASIO drivers for audio apps like Cakewalk if it offers lower latency, or maybe your hardware has better ASIO drivers than WDM, but in terms of the actual sound, i don't think there should be any difference at all.

Also, could it be possible you are hearing a difference due to different sample rates or bitrates?

There is a very slight difference when playing a mp3 between winamp and sonar3..However I record to another track going thru the system dfx12 externalfx bbe362 and aphex 104..Playing both tracks back with sonar3 is 100 % better... Which I do if the singer knows the words or if i am recording...

If I export to a wav and play with winamp there is some improvement but not enough to warrant it in 90% of the time (I can use wavs with the karaoke graphics).. I was just wondering if the winamp was using asio if it would sound as good as playing with the cakewalk player... There is one hell of a difference... Whether the fx and audio procs on system is on or off ...Eq or nothing on winamp would not help it is just for lack of a better description more live and rich from cakewalk... Must be a better sound engine.....

Are you comparing the sound of an .mp3 vs .wav?

If so, then yes, there will likely be an audible difference.

I am comparing playing the wav with winamp and cakewalk... I would like to be able to play the wav with winamp and have the same quality as cakewalk..I have to use winamp to generate the graphics ....

There is I believe an ASIO "plug-in" for Winamp and it's free.
I don't have a link but a search should reveal it.
