I was able to find a lot of answers to questions on other threads, but I’m still a little lost on a few issues. I have plenty of computer knowledge and a computer with tons of HD space, RAM and processor power (I'm a 3D animator by trade) but I'm a total n00b when it comes to home recording and audio. I started out by purchasing an Edirol UA4fx USB "capture interface" in order to get a signal into my computer. That worked okay for recording ideas, but I had latency issues (due to a consumer level soundcard) and not much room for expansion in terms of I/O. So the next step was a real recording card/interface with more I/O...right? After doing a little research (obviously not enough) I picked up a Delta 1010LT from Guitar Center. Just reading reviews and comparing specs, it seemed like a good solution for me, and maybe it is, but now I'm more confused than I was before.

First of all, to get the dumbest question out of the way… what is a good way to record an instrument (such as a guitar) with the RCA plugs? In my life as a sheltered guitarist, almost all of the gear I’ve used has had ¼” plugs. I'm trying to record directly and not mic an amp. Do I need a mixer, a preamp, or is it as simple as buying a cable that has 1/4" to RCA? I know I would need a preamp for a mic, but I wouldn’t think I would need one a guitar coming out of a processor or effects pedal. And I was hoping to be able to do my mixing with software (I’m running Sonar Home Studio 6), so it would be nice if I didn’t have to buy a mixer. I’m not exactly looking to build a full blown home studio that could cut hit records. I just want to be able to record instruments, have low latency, quality sound, some multitracking and good monitoring while recording. Sonar HS seems to work fine for mixing, editing and sequencing.

I’m hoping a TS to RCA cable is all I need to record an instrument. I wouldn’t mind buying a mixer, but it would be nice if I didn’t need one just to do any recording at all with a guitar. Any advice?

By the way...after reading a lot of forums, is it just me or do a lot of people who don't know what the hell they are doing end up with the delta 1010? Add me to the list.

Guitars use high impedance cables, but the RCA ins on the Delta are looking for lower impedance line level inputs. So you'll want a DI box to do the conversion. Something like a DMP3 will be fine if you want pre amps, too. (It has unbalanced outs that will work well with the RCA ins).
