Here's my setup. Mackie 1604 with channel inserts going into my Delta 1010LT. I just got Sonar 6.0 and I am having trouble using session drummer 2. I guess I don't really understand how to set everything up. What confuses me is the midi outputs. When I choose the midi ouputs in Sonar It has Delta 1010 midi out (which I would assume would send it to the Midi out of the card???) and also has "microsoft midi" or something to that effect. All i'd like to be able to do is create drum loops for recording tracks. I'm not really concerned with running a midi synth or anything super complex...so I think this should be pretty easy to do. I understand the basic flow of things but I get mixed up with these software synths and how you set everything up. In sonar on the midi track I set the midi in to "omni" and the output to "session drummer" I'm pretty sure that's right. Help.

Your MIDI in is used for recording the events from an external source, say your MIDI keyboard, or drum triggers. If you don't have any external source, you can leave it to none and "paint" your drum patterns in the Piano Roll view.

The output needs to go to wherever your actual sound is going to come from. If it is a VST, you would pipe the output of said VST to a new Audio Track. As long as you set the channel on your track to match the one on the VST, you should be good.

So it "could" look something like this:

Track 1:
Input-None
Output-"your VST"
CH-10

Track 2:
Input-"your VST output"
Output-"your drum bus"
