What's this new storage system that DELL is hinting at? News leaks I've heard say that they will be discontinuing the inclusion of hard drives of any kind in their systems next month!! This in favor of a storage system capable of much larger spaces.

After next month if you want a DELL with a HD (for transportability/compatibility) it will be available as an option only.

Ummm, you misread the article - 3.5" FDD's will be optional. No HD means no OS or apps and really expensive flash memory like with Windows CE.:p

The cite was that beacon of "fair and balanced" reporting:

FOX news. And they DID say HARD DRIVE, not FLOPPY DRIVE.

Serves me right for believing those morons!

Thanks for setting me straight!

rom chips

That would be pretty sweet however, having a solid state rom for your OS/Data. That would be quick quick quick.

Don't know if it is that good an idea. I like floppies for a bios update.

And I HATE usb!

yeah.. I hate Fox News too... why can't they just put a liberal spin on the news like everybody else...

:p

P.S... here's the article on FOXNews.com.

Oddly enough they say "floppy" aboot fifty times.

Seemed pretty clear to me.

:D

Well- ROM is READ-ONLY, so would be pretty useless for the dynamic portion of your O/S, but a ROM chip that held the static portion of your O/S supplemented by gobs of (fast) static RAM would be my dream machine. Hearkens back to the Commodore C-64 which booted faster than you could say, "Fox News is the Propaganda Wing of the Republican Party".

>Seemed pretty clear to me

I didn't get the article from the net- I was watching the broadcast.
Just like they reported that the Columbia broke up at an altitude of 207,000 miles....

Fair, balanced and frequently illiterate. :D

I just love watching people squirm over that network... :D

I like fox news for the most part, but they do say shit wrong fairly regularly.

I think they should just get new teleprompter readers.. :p

Yes, Bill would love that: you turn computer on and Microsoft Windows, Office, IIS, IE, Mediaplayer, Java, HTML etc. etc. is already there.
And no hard disk to install competitor's software... Only floppy for data.

There are some fast high capacity solid-state 'HDs' out there that are RAM - ie read and write. Very expensive I think... there was a thread about them couple months back. I would love for that to become standard.

Dude, why would you buy a Dell anyway?

I didn't put a floppy in my last PC either. Kind of unnecessary.

Hrm i duno, why wouldnt ya buy a dell heh? Actually i dont think their all that bad, then again i work for dell, but im not paid to promote them by any means.
Anyway , im glad to see the floppy gone, maybe people will be more inclined to back up their data if their forced to get CDRW drives heh.
Besides you can boot from CD now, and most of the new machines (Dells) can have their bios upgraded without using a floppy.....
