Does anybody know what microphone for the drums they used on this album , Sound so damn beautiful. ( I thought this would fit in this forum)

I don't have any answer but I've been wondering this myself for a long time. I've always loved their big full drum sound.

yep, i've got no answers either, but i'm not sure it would matter all that much. i think it has to do with the entire signal chain, room, and post-production than just mics.

i've listed "white pony" as my "reference" cd before, and the consensus has been, "forget it. this is world-class engineering in a multi-million dollar studio. ain't gonna happen."

you're right though--the drums, as well as everything else on that album sound incredible. the "air" in the mix is perfect--i consider it probably the best recording i've ever heard.

I don't know the band, but Like Dross said, just having the same mics would only make a slight more difference than having the same drum sticks. In other words, it has to do with so many other things than simply the mics.

Not to mention they probably used some samples at least on the kick and snare anyways

They used Abe Cunningham.
That guy really knows what he's doing, I think he uses custom drums and as said above, the studio will be hugely expensive.
Didn't somebody post a link to Deftones' raw drum hits a while back?

Check out www.stevenslatedrums.com, they have a modelled sample set of the Deftone's drums.
I have the original drum samples and I'm currently waiting for the upgrade with Detones etc on it, but the originals are brilliant.

I agree that the white pony album sounds amazing, but I've always thought the drums on their previous album (especially My Own Summer) sounded even better.

First off recreating any sound from the Deftones is not an easy task as it is all about the equpment that's used. From the artist, to the instrument , signal chain every thing plays a bigs part. But that a side You can come prety damn close with things like Reason using the RDK2.0 sample library, or eEZdrummer. As far as recording a live drummer mic'ed to do this in a living room or garage good luck. A big part in a drum recording the room they are recorded in, and can change the sound all together. All though with enough drive, creativity and know how you can do just about any thing in the digital age of recording.

To start my advice is to go all the way back to Adrenaline, and work forward. If you listen to the drums on White pony, and then listen to some of the tracks on Adrenaline you can hear the similarities. That in turn will show you the differences in the sound, and give an idea as to wich direction to go.

YES YES YES!

abe is 1 of mt fav. drummers ever, and definitely 1 of the most under-rated out there. the guy comes up with great grooves and beats, and never forces his playing into the context of the song...it seems like everything he does is perfect for the arrangement.

and hardwire666 called it on adrenaline...abe's drums have sounded fantastic from the very beginning - but if i remember correctly, they also had the same producer(terry date) from ATF through at least white pony, if not also more recently.
