I hooked up with a guitarist who is willing to try out guitars with hip-hop/r&b music. I was wondering if I can use a condenser mic or dynamic mic to record a guitar tracks. Does it matter what type of mic I use to get a quality? If so, would you guys recommend any brands for a decent price, not to expensive... Thanks..

a friend of mine doing rap/& runs an AT 4033 into a focusrite penta and gets some awesome results.

He recorded acoustic guitar once and it was such a beautiful, huge sound.

Yes. Hee-hee!

Both are excellent mics. Please note that Mr. Jaguar said his friend was recording an acoustic guitar. The 4033 will do much better on an acoustic than most any dynamic. It can also provide an excellent track of electric guitar, vocals and many other things. It will also cost about $299 here in the States, and requires 48 volts of phantom power, such as that supplied by most recording mixers, or the quality preamp which Mr. Jaguar's friend used. What type of guitar are you going to record, and how will you want it to sound?

The SM57 up close to the grille cloth slightly off axis is the classic sound of rock guitar. It can be very nicely augmented by a condensor, such as the 4033, about three feet back and three foot off the ground.

The SM57 is about $70 hereabouts, and requires no phantom power. Cheers!

I'd like to make a recommendation for the POD.

One of the best amplifiers and mics I know of. :)

THANKS :)

Thanks all, well my friend is using an Ibanez and a custom assemled strat style
guitar with a digitech pedalboard for effects.

I think I'll just throw in my cash for Shure SM57, since I don't really focus into guitars that much. I'll probably upgrade from SM57 to At later.. . THANKS ALOT.. :)

I've found that the Shure KSM 32/sl is an outstanding vocal mic, and is great for many other things including choir, guitar amp miking, and a great many other things. This mic will run you about 500 or so, so its not exactly the cheapest thing in the world. If you can't afford it, try a Shure BETA 58 or 57, or even just a plain SM 57 or 58.

CyanJaguar knows what he's talking about, so listen to him too.

In the recording industry, I've always found that you get what you pay for, (never buy a Marshall MXL 2001; you'll think its broken, send away for another, and it'll still sound like crap), and that monitors are a VERY important part in the studio. So spend as much as you can. If you have to get a crappy board, like a behringer in order to get good monitors, do so. Also, check out the Tannoy Reveal Active. Very reasonable, and I've heard a lot of good things about them.

So Tyler, have you actually used them yourself, or are you just "parroting" what you have heard others say? Which begs the question...........do you really know from experience what you are talking about?

I am NOT quoting from experience, and I admit this freely. I said I have "heard" a lot of good things about them, and that he should take a look at them. I am not telling him to buy them, which is a lot different.

Unfortunately, most of my experiences are in the live sound reinforcement industry, and like everyone else in here, am trying to learn a thing or two. Everyone in here has huge egos, and think they're all that. Anyone in here who is doing this for living right now, well, all I can say is you shouldn't be hanging out in homerecording chat rooms, and should be trying to get a record deal.

GET A LIFE BRUCE!!!

i didin't find the reveals to be that nice.
they're allright, but there are better monitors.

I'm an engineer you twit - I'm not trying to get a record deal........ *clueless*

And I hang here with some of the other pros to teach the people who want to learn something real... which, apparently doesn't include you!

Tyler,

You, by your profile, are 18yrs old. You said quite indignantly in another post.... "I have been doing this since I was 8".........doing what? Doing "live" sound doesn't really give you the experience to immediately think you know everything about recording......for God's sake, I was "doing live sound" at the time you were born.......making the move to recording was a revelation......I had to start learning from the beginning.

As for the pro's on this site, they are here of their own accord to help those of us who want to learn...young and older alike.........if you have any common sense (something your other posts don't indicate), you will sit down, shut up, put your self important oversized ego away, because believe me, at 18 you know diddley-squat, and be prepared to start learning from scratch.

Why is it that I get slammed so hard for the way I slam others . . .

Then I turn around and what do I find?

The very same people slamming someone else. Hypocrytes. Instigators. So what if this guy is a twit. Let him have his say, Aus. Who appointed you "Newb-without-a-clue Police?" Personally, I'll be disappointed if you drive this Tyler dude away. I am rather entertained by some of his, uh, wisdom. :) :) :) Don't spoilt this for me.

Untill you get your majority to vote that this newb has no clue, I don't appreciate your attacks on him.

Chess....

...I hear a train coming that needs some 'verb!!! :p

:D :D

Would you like the "dark chamber" setting . . . the "reflective room," "drum plate," or "Jesus' Choo-choo train" setting? :) :)

You know I was inpired by Alan Parsons' work on DSOTM on that one. Remember the newb who commented it sounded "cool" the way the train kind of sounded like it traveled from one ear to the other - kind of a trippy effect, eh? ? :) :)

Funny Chess, considering the "attitude" tyler has shown from his very first post here on HR.com I think I'm being pretty fair. His own thread on Tannoys which was started with a civil question, has been replied to in a civil manner, as it should be. Elsewhere, if he shows arrogance, rudeness and attitude, then he is likely to have it returned.
