Poser Roaster
Horns Up Metalheads!!! \m/:>\m/

I have been working on guitar cabinet mic placement. I need your guys help at this point if possible. Here is the setup.

Jackson Kelly, EMG pickups(81 bridge, 85 neck), Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier with matching cabinet(celestion vintage 30's 280W cabinet), beta SM57a close mic'ed through Presona Tube Pre into 24 bit Sound Card. Tracking and mixing with Nuendo 1.6 and mastering with Cool Edit pro 2.0 and Izotope Ozone.

My question is on guitar tone as it relates to mic placement. I have recently eliminated the Behringer mixer I was using. It seemed the analog to digital converters had much to be desired and my tracks were always shrilly and rather harsh sounding. This tube pre does a great job, but I think the guitar tone needs some fine tuning. It is my understanding one has considerable control over EQ of a mic'ed cabinet by adjusting the placement of the mic... HELP :) Come on, I need you guys with the seasoned ears to give me some feedback and or suggestions.

Thanks a million in advance!!! And P.S. I saved this as high a bit rate as was possible with the software. If better quality is needed I will be happy to upload a higher quality file.

Beautiful, a Floridian even! :P We are huge Florida death metal fans here!! Death, Morbid Angel, Monstrosity, Malevolent Creation... Etc, etc. Florida is birthplace to some awesome extreme metal. It will be nice to hear your feedback. \m/

Here’s a stone cold honest opinion.

Drums B+ Double bass very tight with good sense of time. That’s the signature of d/m

Guitars B- Sadly lacking crunch. I’m not sure why. I just know that severe sharp crunch is missing. The performance is solid and drives well with the percussion.

Vocal C- very average. First its mixed to low to be noticed. Second its just the same old thing. If the vocals could somehow be different or distinct it might draw more listeners. Maybe some high parts or something.

The performance overall was good and would sound good live but there is not much uniqueness to it.
These things are just opinions so there is nothing necessarily wrong with it; its quite listen able.

yea malevolent creation I've seen all them. Ever heard of Brutal Mastication? That what I mean buy distinct voice.

Well first of all this is a very fresh recording. I barely had enough time to get the performance that close. Second of all please ignore the vocalist. Those vox are just me trying to time them out. Our real vocalist owns! Anyway, the drum track was sequenced with PC drummer so again if you would ignore that. My focus is the Guitar track(s). I realize the crunch and punch are a little weak. Please remember I am not EQ'ing these tracks at all. Just going through a tube pre directly into the sound card.

If you would take a closer listen to just the guitar track there, maybe you can give me some insight as to what I may be doing wrong in the mic placement. Any ideas?

By the way, if you are interested in the final product click here for an MP3 off the first album!

Ok this is the second post. Check out this small chunk of my tecnique practice and see if Im getting closer.

I've listened to Finally and Vulturerough and both are lacking the essential upper mid crunch... in fact there's a blanket over the whole mix...

Overall relative instrument mix levels seem good.... but Bass lite...

Sounds like the guitar crunch is there but not captured...

Finally is a good bit louder than Vulturerough

by now I've listened to both about 5 times... I like them ...

So what would you suggest as far as adjusting the mic position relative to the cab? I would assume for more mid crunch I would move the mic toward the speaker cone a bit. Remember my only EQ on the pre side at this point is mic placement so it is crucial I dial that in before I start tracking an entire album. \m/

FWIW...

looking at your equipment list you surely have everything you need. especially with the Triple Rectifier and EMG pickups.

I'm not sure how you tracked what you have so here goes and experiment with each...

point the mic directly into the center of the cone... this generally gives too much treble... if it doesn't, rebalance the mids and treble a tad... when you have too much treble in the speaker center and not enough on the cone edge, then this gives you the better option to use mic placement as an EQ.

next, maybe back off on the distortion a smidgeon but don't loose the texture

record with a bit more upper mids and less distortion than you think you need... again don't loose the texture. it's better to cut EQ than boost

during the final mix, add about 2db shelving at 15K and about 1 db at ~7.5k

also, cutting around 120hz will help the mids... so if you're really close, but want just a bit more mids, try cutting around 120 to 250 instead of boosting the mids.

\m/ METAL METAL METAL

Cool some extreme metal. I'll tell you what i think when i get done downloading.

Hehe!

Analytical man!!!! (beer) Hailz fellow metalhead! Dudes I think I figured out my problem. I will test after work. I think I am experiencing proximity effect with my beta 57a. I have it shoved right in the grill so proximity is sweeping my mids. I am going to back it up to 1" or so and try that. I will post another chunk later tonight.

here is the full MP3 analytical if you want it.

NOT TOO SHABBY!

I have listened and think that the guitars sound similar to those on Morbid Angels newest album Heretic. Kind of has a spongy warm sound to it. I don't think it is particularly bad, but i know what sound you are looking for, and this is not quite it. The vocals i agree could use a bit more high screams, the drum programming, and the playing was quite good for this type of metal. I would bring the cymbals down a nuthair.
Basically it isn't anything that hasn't been done as was said before, but it competes with a ton of deathmetal that i have been hearing lately. Man there is some terrible shit coming out. This kinda reminds me of M.A. I like it, ad more high shrieks and when you master boost a bit in the high mids and i think you are there. Keep posting metal!!!! I thought we were an extinct breed here at HR for awhile. My studio console is being serviced at the moment but i have some brutal shit i have been working on. You'll have to check it out when you get time. Keep the metal coming. Later -Shaun

All Hail Extreme Metal

Dude Shaun! I am with you 100% Out of all this I have made plans to open a studio here in So Cal! I would love to specialize in extreme metal engineering. It is amazing how much talent there is hidden in the underground metal genres. I believe it is a result of being underground itself which preserves the creative diversity and freedom. We on the underground naturally dispise corporate music because of its oppression of talent. When was the last time Eric Ruttan was told by his producer to change his chorus progression to please teenage girls? Hehe, actually I would love to see someone tell Glen Benton how he should restructure one of Deicide's tunes. LMMFAO!! DON'T THINK SO.

This I think is what helps preserve our metalhead talent. This is why I love extreme metal over any other genre. This is METAL, so throw up a set of horns and prost a beer, cause the pit gets rowdy when we hit the stage.....

I liked the "blanket" over the mids. It means there were no harsh guitar tones slicing my head off at loud volumes.

Not my type of music but I am sure that those who dig this type of music are probably just creaming for it.
