Howdy Boys and Girls! :)

Here's a happy little number about death and violence called;

Dead Wrong

This song was originally in the clinic back in September of 2003 and we received a lot of feed back on the preliminary version of this song which was lacking a repeat of the chorus and news voice-overs from your's truly.

This track was recording on my 16 track, One inch analog reel to reel recorder and is an analog project completely, minus the digital mastering and mp3 conversion at the link.

Me and my buddy Doug are on this one with Doug playing bass, backing vocals and the intro evil announcer. I played drums, did the main vocals and newscaster and stumbled my way through the guitar parts which will be a little ruff around the edges.

Any thoughts as to mix, composition or kind hellos are of course, always welcome.

Cheers! :)

How ya doin Ghost?

You gotta love the rough edge to this.
Everthing in the mix sounds great to me, of course I grew up on analog recordings.
The guitars sound all warm and alive.
The bass has a very good Funkadelic sort of sound to it.
This reminds me of ZZ Tops first studio album.
Thanks Ghost, I really enjoyed this:D

Yeh I remember this from last time. Very zztop-ish. I agree the repeat of the chorus at the end rounds it out well. Nice groove and melody

Excellent recording - everything is well balanced and sits exactly where it should.

It's awesome, the sound you people achieve in a home studio.
Great tune, too.

I think it's a really good mix. Cool fucking song too. The hat's a little loud for my taste, but it's not "wrong" at all.

Cool by you. I'm sure others will slam it, but you shouldn't listen to those no talent jackasses, lol.

What does this have to do with same sex marriges?:(

Where is the tape hiss? I cant hear it.

Very nice everything sounds "dead right"

Thats pretty cool!!!

Not the sort of stuff i usually listen to but i enjoyed it alot. The mix seems really good.

Do you get a sore throat after singing like that for a long time??

It sounds great

I have laryngitis as we speak...er...type...:(

I will get to the rest of you shortly, so hang on a bit and I'll do a marathon response to all of you.

Thanks so far for all the help.

Cheers! :)

What a fun song. I wish I was jammin with you. Liked the speech sample too. I listened to it through a mono speaker on a computer and its sounds clear. Good mix.

Thanks for the listen.

good song but the mix is giving me ear fatigue.. maybe it's just me, but something sounds too boosted.. let that analog warmth shine through.. :)

Man the quality is depressing... I want that quality!! LOL

THE TUNE:
The tune itself is great, It's no non-sense straightforward rock.
The chrous is so right... I can't tell what's under it (A guitar or backing vocal?), but that little touch of harmony really makes it sparkle and yet is perfectly understated...What is that in there and how did you do it??

THE VIBE:
My first thought on the initial guitar and drums was Foreigner's "Head Games" minus the synthy thing they did,
then I was catching some Golden Earing "Twilight Zone" vibe and
even (Gulp!) a wee touch of that old Motley Crue "Looks that kill" gritty distortion and open high hat combo.

THE MIX:
Honestly the high hat seemed a bit loud to me, but as the tune drove on it mixed dead in.. I didn't care for some of the first crash cymbal patches I was hearing, but those worked in REALLY well later in the song too.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I wanted to hear just a tad more bass in the verses' (Level wise), yet again, towards the end it was a nice pay off to get some funk out.

OTHER STUFF:
I really like the few measures after the voice over with the guitar riff change up, the funky bass and the artificial harmonics lick on the guitar.

Did you get a programming glich on the drum machine just into the voice overs or was that a physical tape edit?

For the voice over part (A matter of personal taste here) I wanted the music to go into something of a breakdown section for those measures (Especially the highhat's) and not in it' s place, but in there fade up a track of like "Teletype" or "Typewriter" chatter.
(I'm not exactaly sure what it is, but it's a sound closely associated with "News media broadcast" .

ALSO (Just opinion) in that part I would (Yeah right!) have done the V.O. (Voice Over) in a montage presentation, so it's a series of overlapping "Top stories". The effect being a passage of time and kind of the same old same old bombardment of bad news without being terribly specific., then I'd do the tag as the announcer saying something inane like "In entertainment news" to draw an ironic contrast.

Don't get me wrong, the voice over you've created is getting the job done, but it's (Of course) up to you to decide if it's producing the desired impact.

I don't know how you do it, but every tune I've heard from you guys is better than the one before it... It's kind of scary!

Be Cool
:)

After a few more listens I think my first thoughts on the Voice over section breaking down was Dead Wrong.

I'm guilty of "Getting it" now.

The quality achieved for a home studio is more and more impressive with each listen.

Great Job
:)

Thanks to everybody that gave the tune a listen and especially those that gave constructive criticism which is why we all should be coming here in the first place.

Together, we all fine tune our art and science of recording.

Thank you.

Dan - Thanks for remembering me! I haven't been around here much lately but, I am trying to make amends. Glad you liked the tune and caught the ZZ Top influence. I have always loved those guys since day one.

Bulls Hit - Good memory! I guess there was something there back in September that helped you to remember the track. Thanks for your kind words and helpful advice then and now.

Phyl - Thanks for checking out the track and glad you liked the song.

DigitalSmigital - It's true. It is amazing what can be achieved with some decent used equipment and a bit of experience to know how to twist a knob or two. These days, I feel at a disadvantage with all the digital recording out there and the ability to cut and paste my way to recording success but, doing it the old fashioned way on tape makes the task all the more rewarding.

tjohnston - Thanks for your patience to get through the downloading dilemmas and for your kind words about the track and it's lack of hiss. Oddly enough, dbx noise reduction gives tape a s/n ratio of about 100db on reel to reel and a usable dynamic range of about 110db with no audible hiss. We forgot about that miracle somewhere down the line when digital recording came onto the scene I guess. Glad you liked the track!

yiordanaki - Man did you ever nail the vocal strain! I have been struggling for the past couple of days to get a word out of my mouth without pain. I wonder how Bonn Scott got through a tour? Thanks too for your kind words about the track.

reel buzzer - The speech "sample" was no sample. It was a scripted part, written specifically for this song and read by me, in studio to add to the song's story line. I think I had to do that part close to 7 times before I got the meter right so that the "newscast" would flow with the music and end at the right spot in the song. I have a new appreciation for newscasters and writers. Thanks too for the kind words about the track and the mono reference is also very helpful.

B.SABBATH - Thanks for checking out the track and the helpful advice on the issue of the ear fatigue. i thinks it's mostly the hats and crash cymbal that cause that along with a lack of compression on the vocals in mix-down that helped to cause that.

chrisharris Thanks also for checking out the track and your advice about the hats and cymbals. I am still trying to decide if they should come down or not but, on the remix, which is coming shortly, I think I will knock them back a db or two.

BillyFurnett - Wow. You really made a great effort to critique the song and I do truly appreciate all the points you made.

About the Tele-type idea; that's a wonderful idea though I don't know where I would get a royalty free sample of that to add it?

About the chorus; This was doubled up in backing vocals by Doug singing a clearer mirror to what I was screaming. The song basically had loosely double tracked guitars through-out the recording.

Thanks too for all your kind words about the recording quality we achieve with our stone age machinery. Experience and old age are my only defenses. LOL:cool:

Thanks again to everyone.

Cheers! :)

Great tune.... Good to see there's some good rocker's out there.
This one really caught my ear. I usually don't critique songs but, this one I must. The song starts out great. Then at :26 the lead vocal kicks in. I listened to this song using hi-fi first, then I downloaded it. Then I listened though the monitors. Then I kicked on the P.A. to see what it sounded like. All the same thing.... When the lead vocal kicks in a :26 my 2K lights just light up. Usually, I really like my vocals up front but, this one is really jumping out at me. Just my opinion but, I'd drop them down, just a bit. The newscaster part is perfect, as well as all the other spoken parts. Great job..... I had fun listening.

Good song. Real well done. I thought the guitars sounded especially good. And I liked the kick pattern alternating grooves.

Nice tight performance with a quality sound that was good to listen to.
