What I'm doing:

trying to record, original, Stonesy-like rock and roll.

What I've got:

main mic: AT 4047
board: Mackie 1604
other: JoeMeek VC1Q, Lexicon MPX500, Vegas, Delta1010
budget: $800-900

What I need:

I love the Meek on drums [esp snare] and certain instruments, but am not completely thrilled with it on vocals.

Need a unit, or combination of units, to serve as primary vocal path. e.g pre, compressor, eq, etc .... I do not need digital out, as I can get that through my 1010.

Based on this I was looking very seriously at the dbx576.

At the risk of bringing the GNP of the country down another 2% over people neglecting work to post to another "what's the best compressor" thread I humbly ask you - given what I've described - what's the best compressor for me [to consider]?

Thanks,
John

I run the separates...

I have the 586 and the 566, and think they work great. There's a guy form DBX that posts here fomr time to time that in other threads has suggested the the 386 will get you close to the same results.

I don't own anything else, but look pretty hard at the alternatives, and came close the VC1Q, but am satisfied with the DBX solution.

Given that you already own the VC1Q, what is it that's unsatisfactory? I would think especially for "roots rock" it would be a good unit.

I think if you should aim at a channel strip. The dbx you mentioned is on. TL audio(Europe) has got nice pieces of gear (HHB in US), Focusrite got some, there's the presonus bluetube, there's more. Do a search for them...

However 'word in the street' lately is that an external A/D does miracles...

Thanks schwa,

I'm VERY satisfied with the VC1Q for many applications. I'm getting the best snare sound out if it I have ever heard. I also like it on some bass and guitar work, and plan to use it on some vocals.

It's hard to describe, but .... I want another alternative, esp on lead vocals and certain other parts. Something cleaner. Perhaps because the 4047 is already supposed to give you a 'vintage' sound when I go 4047->Meek I'm getting "too much vintageness". What I'm looking for is vintage->clean-and-present.

Its good to ask advice...

But in your case I would think its critical to listen to the products if possible. The differences are going to be subtle, and you want to make sure you're getting where you want to get.

By the way, the transparancy of the DBX when compared to the Meek is why I selected it. Its tubes also allow some vintageness to be dialed in if desired.

If you'd like to see a review, run on over the ProRec. That guy loved the 576.

Yea, I've read that, thanks. I also listened to his cut and did like the sound. That's what got me interested in the unit in the first place.

I thought before I went any further in the selection/purchasing process I'd ask the panel here to see what other alternatives I should also be exploring.

HHB and 576

I had never heard of HHB ....

The HHB Radius 40 looks interesting. Anyone got the good/bad/ugly on it? Esp visa-vi the 576?

Roel - do you own an HHB piece of gear? What do you think?

hi,

is that vintageness that you refer to the lack of mids. If so, have you tried the sample vocal settings on the joemeek page?.

USually, when I record vocals with the vc6q, I can get away with cutting the low frequencies quite a bit(sometimes all the way), and I ususally have to go back and boost the mids around 2-5 k either from the unit itself or via software.

I agree with you though that It will be good to get another voice channel for a different sound.

I think a good one, considering the high quality equipment that you already have, will be the dbx 576.
Another good one that I've heard(from sonuseman) is the art pro mpa(i think) and it has a boatload of controls.

Here's another suggestion...

The MindPrint Envoice

I own one of these units, and let me tell you... it's a great preamp for the money. ;)

Thanks guys - but you were supposed to help make the decision process EASIER!! <g>

Hey Banerian, I've got a 4047 and run it through the Focusrite Voicemaster (I think I could have done better than the Voicemaster - but I got a great price).

Anyway, on certain voices (male) I seem to have the same problem as you - the 4047 doesn't seem to give the brightness I want - however when I run a Shure KSM32 through the same settings it kicks. However on female voices the 4047 through the Voicemaster sounds great.

Question - have you tried multiple voices - or it the problem only when you track your voice? I originally got the 4047 to provide "warmth" to my voice (I have a harsh R&B voice) - sometimes the 4047 seems to work too well.
