It's me again. I was wondering if I could use my 150 NR's to track with my 38 and a 150x for mixdown on my Otari MTR-10 Will it sound the same as long as they are calibrated correctly? From what I understand the major difference is the 150x uses XLR cable where my 150 uses RCA. I know their is a connection on the MTR for Dolby but I'm not made of money! Thanks for the help in advance.

150X = type I dbx unbalanced or balanced on TRS connectors.

150 = type I dbx unbalanced on RCA's.

Yes they should work fine together.

Dodge, just be careful how you wire the cables you'll use to interface the 150X...will you be using it totally unbalanced (in and out both ways)?

You have the manual right (IIRC)?

If so just pay attention to the cable drawings in there and match up your application to the right drawing.

If not you can still get the manual and some schematics for the 150X at the dbx website.

One caveat: Is the MTR-10 designed for +4 or -10 levels? I think the both the 150 and 150x are designed for -10. Otherwise, type I dbx is type I dbx.

BTW you can find dolby racks on ebay for around $400-500 (for 16 channels) and I've seen both "A" and "SR" go in that price range.

Not sure about the level. Ya 400 + is WAYYY to much for me right now. I have only used DBX and would rather stick to it unless I could find it dirt cheap. Thanks.

Don, nope...150X is the ticket as far as levels go...IIRC they accommodate -20dBv to +14dBu.

If I understand the question, you want to record eight tracks on the 38 and decode those tracks blended through a mixer as a stereo source through a 150x. Is that right? If that’s what you mean you can’t do it that way. The tracks have to be decoded individually and without any level or EQ changes. If you send the tracks through a board and mix before decoding it will mess up the ratios and curves of the dbx. I could be misunderstanding what you’re trying to do.

If you’re just wondering if the two dbx units are compatible then yes they are and the 150x can be used between two devices with different operating levels, balanced or unbalanced.

Also, both the 150 and 150x are simultaneous encode/decode units, so as you’re laying down tracks on a 3-head machine you can hear them decoded from the playback head at the same time.

Well poop! That's what I was asking. What should I do different?

Yes I will be using 1/4 I think it's TS (right?) Or would I want TRS? Since the signal is going one way as far as the wire goes I'm almost sure I would use TS. I'll download the 150x manual.

Dodge, does the MTR-10 run balanced AND unbalanced?

Thanks Beck for noticing this! Well, you could search for two DX-4D's or how many other dbx units do you have? dbx type I units are pretty common on ebay.

Is the Otari 1/2" or 1/4"? You may not need or want NR on it if it's "wide body comfort." (There is another thread on this topic going on now.)

In which case you'd need one DX-4D (?) to complement the (how many?) dbx units you already have.

Note on cabling, the Otari is most likely pin-3 hot, I don't know about the 150x. (if it is tip or ring hot... prob tip, although I have a Creamware A-16 which is of all things ring hot....) Check the schematics.
