DBX 118 compressor

Well boys, I've just scored, what looks like a very minty DBX 118 comp, for what seems like a good deal, considering they've been on the UP since Tom Cram recently stated that the 119 and 118 shared the same VCA and circuitry as the 160VU! :eek: :D Anyway, Can someone please tell me how I should go about hooking up this baby, when it arrives of course, to my TASCAM 308B (which has 1/4" inserts) and my 244 which has "send/receive" RCA jacks. I wanna use it for my vocal. Thanks. --Daniel

I just picked up a DBX 119 which doesnt have as many knobs as the 118 but will suit me fine.

I'm kind of looking for some info/help too on a similar subject (not to high-jack your thread or anything):

My Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96 doesnt have inserts so i guess ill just have to have it in the direct line. However I haven't been able to find any cords that go from XLR to RCA.... can somebody help me here? I could connect the outs on the 118 to the 1/4" inputs on the 24/96 but not for the cord connecting the mic (xlr) to the input of the 118.

I just run mine in the line with the main effects rack...and maybe bounce a track using it...I hate to use prosessing while tracking because It cannot be undone that way.

I got my 118 for 29.00 at one of our local high end stereo stores on the used rack... the same rack netted me a spring reverb with toob for 20.00. SAE 1800 Parametric eq for 50.00. Aphex Aureal Exciter for 25.00. and my 37 watt class A back up reference amp for 69.00.

try your local dealers for some interesting stuff,
 
They share the same VCA, but the input/output circuitry is not the same. Similar, but not the same. Remember the 160 VU is balanced in/out, and the 117/118/119 are unbalanced, theres a big difference right there. They are still dead ringers for 160VU sonically, I'm just being nitpicky.;)

Ok, thanks Tom (and guys) but I guess that's what I meant to say, that, sonically speaking, it's the same. Now, if I plan on using the 118 on a channel insert, how will the fact that it is unballanced vs balanced be of concern ? Lastly, how do you connect the 118/119, as per my earlier question ?

You want unballanced while using inserts. so its taylor made for that duty.
