Hey guys, not so happy with old desktop, and thinking of upgrading. Could your maybe recommend a PC with spec aimed towards home recording? In terms of Intel vs AMD, RAM, maybe tel me what a Duocore does, and whether to go USB or Firewire...or tell me to shut up and get a Mac! Im just getting ideas right now. Currently using a Tascam US 122 with Cubase SE3.

Stay with the tascam us 122 and cubase se3. Duocore is just the newest kind of processor chip like the pentium 4 was a couple of years ago now its the duocore which has two chips if im not mistaken. You can keep pumping some nice stuff with a us 122 no ned to upgrade there really isnt.

Personally, I'd plan to move away from USB for moving audio. Down the road that is...

I was checking out the presonus firepod....just looks so handy, 8 tracks simulataneous is almost too good to be true in my eyes! Is that what ay mean by moving from USB? Firewire?

Dude, you just shutup.

Get a fast PC either Intel or AMD and a decent FIREWIRE audio interface. Then you're set. Macs aren't the solution for everyone.

settle down now. he was just saying what the OP said in the first post back to him. methinks it was a joke (although it's a good idea in my book)

look at the recommended specs for the interface you buy, and at least double everything if possible. that's a good start.

or you could just get a mac

a decent Intel Core 2 Duo based machine can be assembled for ~$500 so I recommend you go down that route since the core 2 duo is the fastest thing on the market right now (and cheap). iMac's use the same chip but you will have to shell out for a cubase update which will probably set u back about $400 since Cubase 4 is the only (shortly available, oct 8) intel mac compatible version

from newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813121035 : Intel 965 mainboard w/ firewire $109.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115003 : Intel Core 2 duo E6600 $316.00 This is the big dog with the 4 mb cache. You can go with the E6400 which has the 2mb cache and costs $100 less. Either of these processors will pretty much eat anything else out there speed wise

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220066 : Patriot DDR2 667 1 gB system memory $114. Start with 1 gig and get more later if you need it

Cost: $539 with the E6600, $446 with the E6400

Use your existing case, monitor, etc. Maybe get a newer power supply (make sure its ATX2 compatible)

Core 2 Duo is definitely the way to go. Benchmark results simply outperform AMD x2 cpu's.

However you have to be realistic about what your needs are - AMD x2 CPU's are great for home recording. I will go for AMD as I just need to upgrade and keep the same mobo, ram, graphics card. There's no point in having that extra power that I'll never use.

With regards to audio interfaces, Firewire 400 may just be enough - again if you're recording one or two tracks at a time, it's pointless going for the more expensive 800 interface.

I had my eye on the Presonus Firepod...

Transfer rate of the Presonus by Firewire is at 400Mb/sec . USB 2.0 runs at 480Mb/sec so performance wise USB2.0 is slightly better.

Again, I have a Focusrite Saffire running on Firewire 400 and it's more than enough...

I'd just get a decent soundcard like a LynxTWO and live happily everafter :D

But USB wont run the firewire....

The Firepod you meant right?

I suggest you use what other users here use the most, surely there are many experienced users in this forum. ;)

Yeah firepod...and i chose that because of other users opinion, its relatively inexpensive and i liked the way it looked.

And run what software?

SE3 has not been ported to Universal Binary - the only version of Cubase that supports MacIntel machines is SX4. All other versions only run on Macs with Motorola processors, not Intel.

Damn people Ease up

read the first post

it was a joke as was BRILLIANTLY pointed out by TnJazz
