I'm a computer science student and really getting an itch to go back to doing something creative again, so I'd like to get some recording/sequencing software (that runs on Vista 64) and make use of it.

I have some experience with Cubase SX3, having fiddled around with my dad's copy a little bit, but not enough that I can't just start with something new.

Considering that I'm fairly new to recording and sequencing I don't need anything hugely advanced, but at the same time I'd rather learn something that allows plenty of potential than learn to use a basic DAW only to find I have to learn to use a completely different one when the limitations become too great and I upgrade.

I'd also like to use something with as many plugins (including instruments, like Cubases's VST) as possible. I have an M-Audio Ozone which I'd like to use too, so whatever software I use needs to be compatible with that.

Lastly, my budget is very small. I can maybe spend about £50 ($80). Perhaps it would be worth getting an older version of something like Cubase second hand?

personally id go with reaper or energy xt2.5 then go over to KVR audio and download free plugins...also try TAL and the cakewalk site for free synths...there's more than enough out there to get you making music and reaper and/or energy are more than enough DAW..

In truth Id save that money and put it towards some kind of audio interface later and buy Computer Magazine for six quid instead, its free dvd comes with everything you need to make and record music plus it has some pretty decent tutorials for beginners..i put together a track only using free stuff for an experiment and it turned out pretty good...much better than i expected..

KVR have just announced their winners of best free developement plugins..and they are very good :)
