okay I put this on here because it kinda crosses in between others.
at the moment I am using the line 6 ableton live lite 7 16-track edition which came free with my pod studio ux2 (no longer in use). It fits my bill fine in terms of all the effects and MIDI instruments, but my problem is the 16 tracks. If I were to record a whole MIDI song it would be fine, but when I have a song near completion in terms of tracking and I have used 15 tracks and want to add 2 MIDI parts in on different instruments I cant do that. So first of all, is there any way I can record 2 different midi instruments onto one midi track?

secondly, I think my next buy will be to upgrade DAW's and I have heard quite a lot that Reaper is good. It is also quite cheap but I just want to ask a few questions.
1. can you have lots of tracks? at least 32?
2. are the effects and MIDI instruments very similar to ableton in terms of number of instruments and effects and quality of them?
and 3. what is it like compared to ableton in the sense of working in it? does it work in a very similar fashion or?

thanks

I'm not aware of there being any track limitation in Reaper. It's meant to be a "full service" DAW - I'd be surprised if there was. I've had 30 or so but I've never counted.

I don't believe, but I'm not the expert because I don't do MIDI apart from drums, that there's much by way of VSTi stuff included with Reaper, but I'm happy to be proven wrong. But for $60, you're not expecting that, right?

okay I dont, but I just looked on their website, they seem to be okayish, they dont go on about it that much so I think it'll be okay.
Just got another question: with reaper and my behringer xenyx x1222usb, how can I record drums into more than one track? so at the moment when i record they go onto one track in ableton, and I want it so I can control each mic on my DAW so I can change if I think the cymbals need to come down a bit etc.

You sir need an interface!

With Reaper or any other DAW, you will need an interface with as many simultaneous tracks as you need - your mixer will do 2.
Reaper doesn't come with much for VSTis, but they are easy to work with IN Reaper. I've found a bunch of free synths t use, and use EZ Drummer. Comes with a slew of f/x plug-ins. There may be a track limitation, but not sure what it is (but big!)

For your current Ableton problem with tracks - yu can bounce down several tracks to a single stereo track, then in a new project use that plus the other non-bounced tracks to get some free tracks to use. I say a "new" project, because if you use the original one, you will need to delete the tracks that were bounced down.

It is an interface?
and that bouncing down thing does make a lot of sense actually :) but just checking, when I save that file and then put it on the new project, it wont be in mono will it? all my panning will still be there yes?
