i don't know anything about DAW. i am looking for a really good one that is really really cheap or preferably free. I am a college student so i don't need anything too fancy and it needs to be something that doesn't require to heavy duty of a computer because this will be on a laptop along with my itunes, word processor, internet, etc. running windows 7 home premium 64-bit. i don't need tons of effects because i have almost all the effects i could want on my pedal board (i play guitar). i will be recording multiple tracks and mixing them together for my band as well as solo projects. they will probably require around 8 different tracks for each song so it needs to be able to handle that.

if anyone can help in anyway that would be amazing. thanks. :)

just to clarify, up to around 8 tracks. i might need a couple more but usually it will be fewer.

Some people use Audacity (free), but Reaper is the better program, no doubt. You're going to need an audio interface.

My advice is to start small and then grow as you learn. Download AUDACITY or ACID EXPRESS (sony) which are both free.

Then, as you learn and feel ok with your progress you can look for other options.

You will need an audio interface, M-Audio is a good option and if you choose M-AUDIO fast track pro, it comes with Ableton's LIVE 6.1 for free which is great entry level DAW.

Garage Band comes free, bundled with a Mac (at least with my Mac).

Don't use it myself, though; I use Sequoia. :p
