Hi i just wanted to know if any of you knew the best way to get the drummer from KoRn's snare and kick sound.

Well if I remember correctly, he uses a TAMA Starclassic Maple set, but there doesn't seem to be anything too distinct about his drum sound. Bass drum isn't too heavy on attack or heavy on boom, just kind of a happy medium. Snare drum isn't real tight or loose, again, a happy medium. Other than having a good, well-tuned kit, there's not much to getting that particular sound. It's just your average rock sound. It's the other instrumentation in that band that makes them sound unique, in my opinion.

my clues

I recently read an article in mix or something that showed the general mic setup for this guy. Something like a U47 in front of the kick, another AKG (forget what) condenser also outside kick, the new dual-capsule Audio Technica inside kick, I forget what they used as overheads (maybe 87s), but I think the snare had Audio-technica mics (He-23?) and I believe AKG 414 on rack toms. To my ears, it sounds like they really use and abuse phase cancellation (snare vs. kick vs. OH) and alot of EQ compression. BTW- Awesome sounds for their style!!!! :)

He used to use a kevlar drumhead on his snare for that extremely high pitched sound...haven't heard Korn in a while so I'm not sure if he still tunes his snare up like that.

Frank Filpetti was the engineer on the majority of the KoRn albums.
He usually uses about 4 or 5 mics on Dave's bass drum.

He had an article in Electronic Musician towards the beginning of the year, I'll see if I can dig that issue out. There was a diagram there too, I'll scan that so you see how it was all laid out.

I've been told that Terry Bozzio is the one sitting behind David's kit in the studio. And I have no reason to not believe the source of this information.

no...no he doesn't...

I've seen some studio footage of David behind the kit...I doubt Terry Bozzio does it. And if there was a ringer in for David, I'd assume it'd be Jose Freese since he seems to be the man of the hour in that respect.
