So here's what happened.

I installed a second hard drive for a friend of mine, he's on cubase and needed it for extra space and to reduce dropouts when recording etc.

All went well, fomatted the new drive and copied his audio files from one disk to another. Everything was in two folders. Songs and Samples.

He's running Windoze '98, and I used a 'copy and paste' in explorer to copy the folders first. And then (when it had all copied across and my friend had cast his eye quickly over the contents of the folder on the new drive) I deleted the original folders.

So far so good. But it turns out that the folder on the new drive is missing one subfolder. This subfolder contains the audio and session files of the most recent track he had finished, a remix job for another artist.

Windows gave no error messages during or after the copy procedure.

Weird huh ?

Anyway, he's in trouble, and that means I'm in trouble unless we can get this data back. The two folders, when deleted, were too big for the recycle bin.

Please don't tell me I should have have compared the sizes of the folders before deleting the other one. I know that. I know I'm a dumbass.

Please don't tell me that it's impossible for Windoze to lose a subfolder during a copy procedure without reporting it. Because I know that too. But it happened anyway.

Can anybody fill me in on our options ? Recommend data recovery/undelete software or services ?

Thanks alot,

Nathan

You'll need to grab some undelete software. If you look around on the net you can find lots of choices. You could also probably accidently download one form Kazza or similar file sharing app. As long as you don't mess with the computer too much you can grab the stuff. The more you add new stuff, the less odds you have of getting your stuff back. When deleted, the data is still there, just marked to be overwritten. As long as nothing overwrites the area where you data is you should be able to get it back. THis means doing as little to the machine as you can beofre running the undelete util.. even go as far as installing the undelete app to the new drive so you don't lose anything on the one with the deleted stuff.

Do not use the original drive until you have the recovery software in place. You should get more recent data back soon enough. Easy recovery is good. Hiren's boot CD also contains a brilliant litle free utility for this stuff...
