I'm a newbie and also so committed to analog that I came into CD late. So late, in fact, that digital audio tape completely passed me by in the process. It doesn't seem to be a very robust medium any more and I was wondering how people felt about it? Any general thoughts are appreciated such as how people feel about sound quality, etc. How do owners feel about it? DAT kind of interests me, but I don't want to pursue a medium that is defunct or a possible dead end. Many thanks for any insights.

Denny DAT's right:

Dat boxes are still around but they are kind of fading off into the sunset of disappearance!

I've never used one but have heard production cassettes made from a DAT master tape--not bad stuff.

But, waiting for the tape to rewind? I don't do that any more since I got the digital SIAB.

Poke around and see what you can find?

The sound quality is essentially identical to CD - 16-bit, 44.1kHz (most also go to 48kHz).

Back when CD-R blanks were $60 each, DAT machines were great to have around. Now, not so much. I rarely use mine (only for clients who bring in old DAT tapes for compling. I haven't had a new studio mix on a DAT tape in probably over a year.
