i know this doesnt really belong here , but there isnt a general digital forum , oh well , ill try it here anyway .. Im looking at buying something like a DAT machine to mixdown too.. i was also going to look into an analogue multitracker , like a reel to reel fostex or tascam.. I was curious as to what the difference is between a dat and an adat .. would i be able to just purchase the adat and do both jobs ?? i know we're getting away from analogue , but i mainly wanted something to record to then possibly mixdown to the pc then perhaps be able to make a dat master .. is there an easier way ?? but im mainly curious about the differences , thanks all...

Easy one!!!

DAT = Digital Audio Tape

ADAT = Alesis Digital Audio Tape

The difference? About 6 tracks.

DAT players record to two tracks at once.

ADAT is a 8 track multitrack machine.

Two different babies altogether.

I wouldn't invest a dime into a DAT player. Your computer with a good soundcard will offer you so much more.

cheers ed , cleared it up for me ...
so u think just investing in my pc and card might be better ?? im using a p3 450 , with an ISIS card..ok , but im looking at something a little more pro , yet still not hugely expensive .. say around $1000 US... any suggestions ??
cheers

Well spider,
There is alot one can do with a grand.
From what I hear the ISIS is a good card, so you are off to a good start. Concentrate on getting good mixes on your harddrive and burning cd's.

hi there bball , your so right ... heaps in fact can be done with a grand .. Not saying it will buy a lot of material things though.. gee , with the price of everything its hard to build up an arsenal of gear.. but I think i realise now that ive got a stable reliable recording medium , why not expand in other areas ... maybe someday ill look at tascams and adats, but for now i might stick to getting more proccessors.. anyway , cheers all..
