Thing are getting out of hand Tim. I tried getting some 8 track tape for my half inch machine the other day and all they had was 4 track. Go figure

...all kidding aside....

I don't know how they make the test tapes to be universal. I just don't get it.

They come out of the test-tape lab pretty-darn uniform between each other. They must have extremely specialized, one-of-a-kind electronics to constantly check the record levels as the tapes are being manufactured. The record heads that are used to make test tapes are mono, taking up the entire tape (obviously.) And I would assume that every so often, they'd measure the magnetic field strenght on the produced tape itself, to check that it's the proper level of nWb. hmm.

Someone might only have 16 tracks. :D
it's ok. You can use this tape on 16-tr machine... you just use-up 16 tracks of it and leave 8 traks blank/unused.... no big deal
also if later you want to re-sale this tape on e-bay you make a note: "This tape was used in professional smoke-free environment on 16-track machine, so 8 tracks of it have never been used, so they are in like new condition. :D :D :D :D

I’m just disappointed it’s not 1-inch 16-track. See, with that I could run it on my TSR-8, and then flip it over and use the other half. Or I could just use one side and resell it as only half used. :p

what is probably even more scarce is the 1" 12 track tape ... I think the guys in the band "Boston" used it...whoa!!

btw...what was the track count on some of those Stephens multitracks? weren't they some odd number too?

again, you can use this tape... all you'd need then is a longitudinal splicer.
May I SUGGEST :D :D :D ? ..you may find one on e-bay, as well :p

lol

I'll bet this may be the clue to what is wrong with my MSR-16. It was the wrong track of tape, not the NR, causing hiss the whole time. I'll bet it was 24 track 1/2" tape I am using, not 16, thus the extra 8 tracks, although not being used, are contributing to the hiss. See, all that talk about capacitors and gizmos inside the machine and the problem was under our noses all the while. I'm searching e-bay for 16 track, like PRONTO. :D :D
I know it is cruel, but has anyone e-mailed this seller and had a little fun yet?

if you want to be cruel, then e-mail the seller with question: "Were all the tracks on this tape tested. Are all the tracks in good working condition?" :p

Too bad, I can't use it cause it can't be recorded backwords.

In that case you just fold the tape in half down the middle, and then record forward and play backwards. ;)

No, no, no...that's too complicated. Just sing and play everything backwards when tracking, then it will be fine. :D

The sad thing is people from other forums may not know we're joking. I just hope they're not taking all this down to impress their teachers in recording class.

We might get a bad reputation or something... :p
