I have the following setup:

Darla 24
Midiman Keystation49 midi controller
Soundblaster PCI128 card
Cubase SX

Using the midi controller and the synth on my soundblaster card (or I can use the Microsoft GM Wavetable synth that came wth the controller) for my midi sounds. I can't find a way to combine the audio and midi to be output from my Darla card. I can unplug my speakers from the darla and plug them into the output of the soundblaster and then I hear the midi sounds but I can't hear the audio sounds. Plug into the darla and I hear audio but no midi even though the input and output for midi is registering on my meters in cubase. So, how do I combine the midi and audio to be output from the darla card? Is this even possible? IF not, what are my options?

Open up the windows mixer by double clicking the speaker icon and go to Properties - Record. Make sure that MIDI is selected as a record device.

Make sure that the Darla is setup as your preferred audio device and that should enable the General Midi softsynth to play through it. When you use the SB's sounds you are actually playing off of the hardware synth chip so that can be a little more tricky. Go to Control Panel - Multimedia to play with those settings.

If you cant get it to work within the computer a hardware workaround would be to take the audio output of the soundblaster and plug that into an input on the Darla.

I don't use the SB's midi sounds so I can't say for sure which way will work best.

Still not working

Well, I went into the control panel (XP) and tried the suggestions. Everything is set up (there was no option for midi but the GS Wavetable synth was listed with volume maxed) correctly it looks like. How about this: Are there software modules I can buy to use with my midi controller that might get me around this freaking sounblaster card? Wouldn't that solve my problem in that the sounds would be generated from the software and they could be routed to the darla just like an audio signal? If that makes it work, I'll gladly buy.

Thanks again - what a great site, I've posted several times before with diff subjects and gotten great responses every time!

strange

Also (forgot to mention this) I have the option in my output in cubase to select either the sb synth or the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth that came with the driver for the midi controller. One would think that if I chose the GS wavetable synth for the out that my midi out would work (and it is showing on the input and output meters in cubase) but I'm getting no sound. If I choose the sb synth and plug the outs to my speakers into the sb card I get sound. When I switch to the GS wavetable synth and am plugged into the sb card, I don't get any sound. So, currently the only way I can hear midi is to have the sb synth selected for out and be plugged into the sb card.
