Ace, thanks a ton for coming back gents and Illsidgus for giving it a listen. The response to this one has been great, I appreciate it - as I do all the mix suggestions. I often need a gentle shove in the right direction and to reign in my natural inclination to make the bassline dominate everything. To my ears at least, the differences in the third mix change the dynamic of the tune completely - something that really surprised me when I listened back.

Dobro - I think you may be right. I've revisited earlier tunes and made improvements, so maybe the same with this once I've had a good break from it. My ears need a rest from this song now and I'm itching to start on something new. Thanks all :)

The difference was a little shocking to me, in a good way. Dynamic change is a good description - the scales kinda balanced out between ligt and dark, just the right amount of each to my ears. Forgive me if you already explained this, but was that you doing the bg vocals? The changes really made the vocal parts stand out and they sounded really good on this.

I think he said he did them himself, although it sounds like a different person almost to me. I agree, the biggest change may be how much more the BG vocals are featured in this mix. Well done Rob.

Yeah, all the vocal parts are me. Backing vocals are something I always struggle with as I'm quite limited vocally and I'm not really sure how to really write them - when I double them I always end up with nasty phase unless they're very low in the mix and I can never find the right way to blend them in the mix. I'm sure that with more practice I can improve, but for me they're one of the most frustrating elements to recording.

For this one I thought I'd try singing the backing vocals an octave higher than the main vocal and it came off surprisingly well. The main vocal is very much in my main register and the harmony is almost at the top of my upper register, which is probably why they sound so different - it's kind of like a one man lo-fi Gram Parsons/Emmylou Harris effect :D
