Bring Back Transfat!
So this Dala24 card of mine is digital only I'm told. I though midi was digital. What's the deal? If midi isn't compatible with the Darla directly, is there an anolog to digital remedy?

If you need Midi and have USB ports, you can get a Midiman Midisport fairly cheap...or if you had a Soundblaster type card in the computer before Darla, use it for Midi....

BTW,

I guess you can call MIDI digital, but MIDI and digital audioa are two different things...alot of pro and pro-sumer type cards dont have MIDI on them....

Yeah, I'm going back through the faq's and tutorial stuff now. I don't know that I need midi....I was just alerted by ProTracks that it wasn't available when I swapped to the Darla. So I bought Ntrack. I'm micing my guitar amp and drums. My keyboard can go thru my amp and be mic'ed..so waht would I need midi capability for?

If you dont need it, thats up to you....I hardly use it myself.....If you do, I see from another post that you have a SB Live...it would be simpler to run both cards....

getuhgrip, sure, you can record your keyboard directly.

Why midi? Because Midi is badass stuff, thats why!

With midi, you can play licks slow and speed them up, add notes with a mouse, correct rythmic mistakes (quantize), move wrong notes with a mouse, Make your keyboard play sixteen parts at once, add drum tracks and make them perfect, import midi files, on and on. Midi is ideal for people who dont play keyboards (like me) and do complex stuff (like me). I do classical music, and there is no way I could play the stuff I write, so I do it slowly, make lots of mistakes, and I correct them by moving the notes I missed with a mouse.

Thats why midi! BTW, I have a Darla24 and the Midiman Midisport that Gidge mentioned, they both work great.
Good Luck, Dave

.....another cool thing is if you recorded that midi part with a strings sound and during mixing it just isnt gelling, you can change the sound with just a click and a patch change and viola, new sound....

...and as far as writing stuff that I cant play, im guilty of that...piano parts i usually have to play at about half time and then double the tempo....

....but if he doesnt need it.....

Now, are you guys talking about using something like a midi processor controlled buy a keyboard? I am using acoustic drums and I do all my own guitar work by mic'ing my amp. I'm not doing any "tehcno" peices. You know, doing this on computer sure beats the hell out of bouncing between reel to reels, but damn is it confusing! BTW...still looking for a recently done book covering mixing scenarios and not too basic multi-tracking. Thanks

Oh yeah, I'm lookin for imfo on this midi man thing now. Thanks Dave, Gidge
