Boner-obo
What a pain.

Called Dell Customer Support (India) because of insufficient memory to load a driver. 1420 (Vista) has 2GB but still error-ed out. Worked with one tech, then a 'senior' tech, all to no avail. Called back yet again and worked with yet another tech, actually pushing binary assembler instructions through debug... if you can believe that shit. Nothing worked. Flashed the bios... nope. Finally, after spending literally ALL DAY on the issue the tech decided that the mobo needed to be replaced. Thankfully I paid for the top drawer warranty service, but the laptop still won't be working much before Wednesday of next week because the part isn't available... which is somewhat telling in my opinion.

I wonder if I had refused to do all of that crap if they would simply have sent a tech. Think I'll try that next time... Lord forbid there should be a next time!

its really weird, even with how cheap they can get Indian tech support, theyd still save a LOT of money if they just wrote the real names of their drivers instead of rt46438738438438664773.exe or whatever

Its taken all day before to fix a few things with a tech consoled in but I gotta admire the fact that they would rather spend a day working on just my pc than to have me helpless

Preaching to the choir. I had to open Task Manager to find the name and location of the .exe that their utility was attempting to execute, then create a shortcut on the desktop to CMD.EXE so that I could open a DOS window, THEN execute the .exe that was failing through DOS to see what the damn error was to begin with! That alone nuked a couple of hours the day prior! I had forgotten about that waste of time.

Dell (Indian) Tech Support

Guys,

I got this Email last month. I think it appropriate to post the 3 photos and the caption that accompanied it.

Enjoy!

Yeah, I worked at dell for quite a while in business to business sales. Tech support is more a less a joke unless you pay for gold tech support. The only thing gold does is get you an "American" instead of somebody from India. That company, overall, has really good systems. The company as a whole is a joke though. It all started going south when they out sources their support and started putting their stuff in Wal-Mart. Call centers started getting closed because there wasn't a need anymore for as much phone sales support.

I always got a kick out of it when some business would be calling in to get started on a network and want 10 systems and you price out something really good for them at a good cost and they say, "Hell, I can go to Wal-Mart and get a Dell for $399. You're trying to rip me off!"

Yeah, go buy that piece of sh*t sold in Wal-Mart made to do the bare minimum. Talk to you in a few weeks when you decide you made a mistake.

Sorry...a little hatred for that place since I quit. But yeah, I still use their computers, lol. My XPS 420 is beautiful.

"Fuck Vista and Bill Gates" is all I can say.

Dell is still selling PCs with XP until the end of this month, though I hear they're charging extra to do so.

My laptop is 4 years old. It's not a Dell, and I won't get a new one because Vista is a pain in the ass to work with.

Can you buy XP separate from a computer anywhere? I am not ready for another learning curve by going MAC...

Yes, you can probably always buy XP from any of thousands of sources (i.e. online software stores, Ebay, etc.), ..... BUT

But the issue may start to be that the newer machines have all the latest and greatest hardware (in theory anyways), for which you might have a little difficulty hunting down drivers for XP.

That may not be a problem today, but theoretically will become a nightmare as the months pass into years.

I hope to God I never have to buy a computer again. Personally, I cannot see why I ever would. The one I have been using for the past 4 years does Word Documents fast enough (lol), and just fine for Sonar v3.

In fact, when the wife ties this machine up, I turn on my Win98 SE machine which still does everything just fine.

I bought a new Dell Tower almost a month ago - WITH XP.
I've a couple of other DELL's in the house.
THey'll send a tech IF you can't do the stuff they try via email etc. Just play dumb.
I had a HDD prob but went along for the email & phone attempts for 3 days before I said I was in over my head - they sent someone out the next day. All fixed, all good.
I don't have a prob with some young lower middle class Indian making a living so long as that situation gets the task done and doesn't remove an established job from here.
The good tech experience was the 1st reason to go Dell again - the option to have XP clinched the deal though!

I can see the point, but I'd still rather have XP than Vista. I tried to help a friend set up his new laptop with Vista on it, and I couldn't figure out where half the stuff is. The folders are all different, and the interface is annoying. You have to give the damn computer permission to do anything. I understand why they did it: viruses. But damn, enough is enough.

As far as drivers for new hardware, what is new onboard? Most still have a DVD/CD-RW drive and a few USB 2.0 ports. Some have multiple card readers and onboard webcams now, but I don't use that shit and never will...

Some on-board video, sound, network drivers I have found work on vista but will not work on XP. But all and all Dell is good about that so far. If they continue to use Intel based motherboards everything should be fine, for recording anyway. See with an Intel based motherboard (dell) you can goto the Intel site / device manufacturer (i.e Sound card, video card, etc) and download the drivers.

One plus if you load the machine from scratch with the Intel drivers you don't have to have all the stuff dell loads with the machine, and its drivers. Thus you free up CPU and Memory for more important things like VST's or More tracks! :D :D

I have vista and its not been a problem. Its not Vista's fault that other companies haven't provided update drivers yet. But, as I said, I have Vista and have had very few problems finding new drivers for any program.

I think you missed the point

My wife won a Sony Vaio laptop at Xmas 2007 with Vista Home Premium on it.
I removed all the extra software.
Everything just doesn't work well, and forget about burning stuff. Doesn't play in anything back. Freezing video in all DVD players. Major Microsoft DRM BS ... on my own home videos even.

My wife likes the free games, and I use it to put pictures from Digital Camera to my USB stick. Not much else.
